England World Cup 2018 Bid Wins Just 2 Votes
World Cup 2018 To Be Held In Russia, 2022 In Qatar
England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup has ended in humiliation when they won just two votes and were eliminated in the first round of voting. The 2018 competition will be held in Russia, to many a surprise choice but supposedly the preference of Fifa general secretary Sepp Blatter, while the 2022 competition will be held in Qatar.
England were expected to battle it out with Spain and Portugal in the final round for the right to host the competition but in the end the Russian bid was the winner, the first time the competition has been held in eastern Europe.
The voting was as follows:
First Round
Russia 9 votes
Spain/Portugal 7 votes
Holland/Belgium 4 votes
England 2 votes.
England were eliminated at this stage
Second Round
Russia 13 votes
Spain/Portugal 7 votes
Holland/Belgium 2 votes
Russia wins an absolute majority.
The recriminations now begin with fingers pointed at the BBC and Sunday Times, both of which made bribery allegations against members of the Fifa executive.
But there was shock at the disclosure that England won just two votes. Assuming that the English member of the committee, Geoff Thompson, voted in favour of the England bid that meant that just one other member – believed to be the Japanese member – voted in their favour.
Prior to the vote the England bidding team were confident. At the final presentations this morning the English team put in a formidable pitch featuring speeches from Prime Minister David Cameron, Prince William, David Beckham and 27-year-old Manchester City community worker Eddie Afekafe. But it was all in vain.
The Russian bid team hailed the decision to take the competition to eastern Europe.
“We can promise you a World Cup you will never forget. Let us make history together,” said Vitaly Mutko, the Russian sports minister.
Meanwhile the 2022 competition will be held in Qatar. The Gulf state, with just 1.7 million people, becomes the smallest state ever to host the World Cup.
The voting was as follows:
First round
Qatar 11
South Korea 4,
USA 3,
Japan 3,
Australia 1.
Australia eliminated
Second round:
Qatar 10 votes
South Korea 5 votes
USA 5 votes
Japan 2 votes
Japan eliminated
Third round:
Qatar 11 votes,
USA 6 votes
South Korea 5 votes
South Korea eliminated.
Fourth round:
Qatar 14 votes
USA 8 votes
Qatar obtained an absolute majority.

Fifa Suspends Duo After World Cup Vote Claims

Follow us on Twitter
Adamu and Temarii Suspended from 2018 and 2022 Votes
Fifa have suspended two members of its executive committee after claims they asked for money in exchange for World Cup votes.
Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii have been banned from voting in the hosting ballots for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups with Adamu banned from football activity for three years and fined 10,000 Swiss francs and Temarii was banned for one year and fined 5,000 Swiss francs.
Four former executive committee members were also fined 10,000 Swiss francs and suspended from football. Ismael Bhamjee of Botswana has been given a four-year ban, Amadou Diakite of Mali and Ahongalu Fusimalohi of Tonga three-year bans and Tunisia’s Slim Aloulou a two-year suspension.
The suspension of Adamu and Temarii means the hosting ballot for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup competitions will proceed with 22 members instead of 22. However, there are fears that their suspension could in the long run adversely affect the England bid for the 2018 tournament as both were expected to cast their votes in favour of the England bid.
Adamu and Temarii were secretly filmed by reporters from the Sunday Times allegedly asking for payments for votes. Nigerian Adamu allegedly said he wanted £500,000 to build four artificial football pitches in his country in contravention of Fifa rules while Temarii is alleged to have asked for payments to put towards a sports academy in his home country of Tahiti.
The reporters had posed as representatives of American companies that wanted to bring the tournament to the USA although there was no suggestion in the paper’s reporting of any wrong-doing by the USA’s bid to host the 2022 tournament.
“I am profoundly disappointed with the ethics committee’s findings and had honestly believed I would be exonerated of any charges by now,” Adamu said after the hearing’s findings were announced.
“I am innocent of all the charges levelled against me by the ethics committee and I completely refute the decision they have made.
“As yet I have not been advised of the grounds of the ethics committee’s decision but regardless, I will be lodging a full appeal against it with immediate effect.”

Concerns Raised Over All Four Bidders
England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup has received a ‘low risk’ grading from Fifa in its executive summary report ahead of the crucial vote next month that will award the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
However, the report, which will be published on Wednesday, has highlighted four contractual areas of concern. These are thought to be related to the booking of hotel rooms, the booking of training sites at both venues and training camps and the fact that TV rights are protected. Fifa is thought to be concerned that it could be exposed by the England bid’s failure to contract hotels and training camps while the protection of TV rights – the World Cup Finals can only be shown on free-to-air TV – means Fifa could potentially lose out on higher rights payments from pay-tv companies.
It is thought that England’s main rivals, the Spain/Portugal joint bid and the Russian bid, are also classed as ‘low risk’ while the Holland/Belgium joint bid is classed as ‘medium risk.’
Fifa’s points regarding the England bid are thought to be technicalities. The government is apparently set to step in to review the so-called ‘listed events’ in 2013 while it is thought that issues regarding training camps and hotel rooms can be smoothed over.
The summary also raises question marks over England’s main challengers, making it difficult to ascertain which of the four bids have the upper hand.
Spain/Portugal has the same number of ‘low risk’ gradings as England but Fifa raises concerns over the two countries’ decision to make a joint bid. It is also criticised over its city transport infrastructure, a lack of clarity over technology and venue-specific hotels and training sites.
The Russian bid receives more ‘medium risk’ gradings than England or Spain/Portugal with the size of the country, its remoteness from other countries, and its limited high-speed rail network causes for concern.
Like Spain/Portugal the Holland/Belgium bid is criticised over its decision to run as a joint bid but hotel rooms, training sites and team hotels, and the lack of government guarantees are major concerns.
The executive summary is to be published on Wednesday but full reports will only be available to Fifa committee members.
The vote to award both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups takes place on 2 December.

France Suspends Entire World Cup Squad For Friendly

Follow us on Twitter
The French Football Federation has taken the unprecedented step of suspending every one of its 23-man squad for the forthcoming friendly with Norway. The decision was taken by new coach Laurent Blanc and was upheld by the FFF at a meeting this morning.
A statement on the FFF website said:
“Laurent Blanc was heard this Friday, July 23 by the Federal Council which he presented his staff and his sporting project.
“He also proposed to the Federal Council, which agreed to retain for the friendly match Norway-France, Wednesday, August 11 in Oslo, none of the 23 players officially selected by the French Football Federation for World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
“Laurent Blanc will communicate the list of players selected for this Norway-France match on Thursday, August 5 at 11:30 am CET at the head of the FFF.”
France suffered a torrid World Cup campaign in which it drew one and lost two of its group matches, finishing bottom of its group. Striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home after an argument with then-coach Raymond Domenech at half-time during the team’s game with Mexico after which the entire squad refused to attend a training session after a member of the back-room staff was accused of leaking details of the argument with the press.

Psychic Octopus Tips Spain to Beat Germany

Paul The Psychic Octopus Tips Spain Win
Paul The Psychic Octopus, the sea creature that tipped Germany to beat both England and Argentina in their knockout round games in the World Cup, has tipped Spain to beat Germany in their semi-final encounter on Wednesday.
Paul, whose predictions are interpreted according to which food container he uses, put a tentacle in the Germany container before plumping for Spain.
The two-year-old octopus was born in England but raised in Germany. So far in this World Cup he has also correctly predicted a win for Germany over Australia but also its defeat by Serbia.
The mollusc is rapidly becoming the star attraction at the Sea Life Aquarium in the west German city of Oberhausen.

Nigeria Suspends Football Team After Poor World Cup Showing

Nigerian Football Team Suspended from International Competition
Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, has suspended his nation’s football team from international football for a period of two years. The move follows Nigeria’s poor showing at the World Cup, where it was eliminated at the group stage.
“Mr President has directed that Nigeria will withdraw from all international football competition for the next two years to enable Nigeria to reorganise its football,” Ima Niboro, a special adviser to President Jonathan, told reporters in Abuja on Wednesday.
There is no word on whether David Cameron is planning to do the same to the England team.

Journalist Arrested Over England Dressing Room Incident

Sunday Mirror Denies Involvement With Pavlos Joseph
A Sunday Mirror journalist has been arrested in South Africa in connection with an incident in which a fan allegedly entered the England dressing room following a World Cup match.
South Africa’s national police commissioner Bheki Cele said the Sunday Mirror’s Simon Wright had been arrested in connection with the incident. Mr Cele said that Mr Wright had been charged with harbouring Pavlos Joseph, who is accused of entering the dressing room, and that police in South Africa “had reason to believe the incident was orchestrated”.
Mr Cele said that Wright allegedly booked hotel accommodations for Joseph using false details and that the journalist had a contract with Joseph for exclusive interviews for seven days “after he made news.”
“Police strongly believe the motive was to put World Cup security in a bad light and possibly to profit from this act,” Mr Cele said.
“Do we believe that it was orchestrated by this journalist for Mr. Joseph? Yes, we do,” he added.
The incident happened at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town following England’s goalless draw with Algeria. Pavlos Joseph, 32, from London, is alleged to have evaded security and entered the dressing room where he was involved in a verbal altercation with David Beckham.
Mr Joseph claims he chanced upon the dressing room while looking for a toilet, but found himself in the dressing room where he exchanged words about England’s performance with Beckham before being escorted out.
The Sunday Mirror issued a statement today denying that their reporter had anything to do with the incident.
The paper said: “He was engaged in a legitimate story for his newspaper and any suggestion that he or the newspaper was involved with Pavlos Joseph before he entered the England dressing room is entirely false.”

England v Germany Betting Preview
Blue Square’s Alan Alger takes us through the betting permuations for Sunday’s World Cup showdown between England and Germany.
England’s path to potential World Cup glory went from easy to difficult in the time it took Landon Donovan to slide in and beat Rais M’Bolhi in the Algerian goal on Wednesday. Now the route to the final starts with Germany and could take the Three Lions past Argentina and Spain on the way to meeting Brazil – but first things first!
There seems to be a prevailing mood in the country that England are getting better and Germany aren’t that great. Although only two weeks ago we were marvelling at the German destruction of Australia after England’s stuttering start against the Americans. As always in football the truth is usually somewhere in between – unless it’s an argument on how bad Nicklas Bendtner is!
The prices for this titanic ‘last 16’ clash pitch England as slight favourites at 13/8 with
Blue Square.
A German victory is 7/4 with a draw priced at 11/5. Those prices do not include extra-time and penalties which are priced individually as special markets.
It’s 11/1 that Germany win in extra-time, with England 9/1 to do likewise.
If the match goes to penalties the it’s the Germans that are favoured –unsurprisingly! It’s 9/1 that Germany can win the battle of nerves and secure a hat-trick of spot kick wins over England after Italia ’90 and Euro ’96. England are 10/1 to win a shoot-out.
Blue Square also have an exclusive market on which English player will be the one to plunge the nation into misery by missing the decisive kick!

James Milner is 20/1 to lose his nerve and miss at the vital time.
John Terry knows a thing or two about missing when it matters most and he is next in the betting at 22/1.
Wayne Rooney is likely to be one of the first to step up and take a kick, but if you’re backing the Manchester United striker to fail at 50/1 you’ll need him still to be on the pitch – which is unlikely considering his failure to last out matches recently. 120 minutes may be beyond him at the end of a long season.
German striker Miroslav Klose missed their final group game with Ghana after receiving two yellow cards in the match with Serbia. At 32 years of age it’s probably a welcome rest for the striker who is chasing an all-time World Cup scoring record at the 2010 finals. Klose has managed to notch five goals in each of the last two tournaments and opened his account for 2010 in the 4-0 win over Australia.
Blue Square are pitching Klose against Wayne Rooney in a special ‘goalscorer matchbet’ for the game. The bet is based on who will score the most goals between the two frontmen and Rooney is the 14/5 favourite despite having yet to break his goalscoring duck on the greatest stage.
Klose incredibly, with 11 World Cup goals more than Rooney, is the 7/2 outsider, with a tie between the two players priced at 4/7 (including both not scoring).
Klose’s teammate Mehmut Ozil has tried to take the edge off Rooney’s game by being complimentary ahead of this afternoon’s meeting, but he should not have worried as Sir Alex Ferguson had already done that by playing him once a week since March despite a lack of full fitness.
Rooney is the 11/2 favourite to score the first goal and 9/1 to be the first player booked – on the evidence of the tournament so far I know which one I’d want to be on.
Sir Geoff Hurst has been the face of
Blue Square since our April Fool in which he stated that his second goal against the Germans in the 1966 final did not cross the line.
Blue Square have given Sir Geoff a free bet on each of England’s matches at the 2010 finals.
The hat-trick hero has plumped for a one-nil win to England with Jermain Defoe as the scorer again. All winnings will be donated to his charity Sparks.
Blue Square are also giving a helping hand to punters that may need a little extra help as England did in 1966. All player markets have been extended into extra-time, so you’ll have an extra 30 minutes for your players to score that all important goal (or hat-trick) if the match ends in a draw. This offer will run in conjunction with our generous ‘0-0 cashback’ which has already refunded over £75000 back to
Blue Square customers during the tournament.

England need a win to ensure qualification to the knockout stage, while Slovenia need only a draw to progress. If England fail to get out of this group it will be the first time they have failed to do so since defeat in a play-off against the Soviet Union in 1958.
England Team News v Slovenia
England boss Fabio Capello expects Matthew Upson to start at centre-back in place of the suspended Jamie Carragher.
Joe Cole is being touted as a possible starter with Capello using a 4-5-1 formation rather than his favoured 4-4-2. Cole would expect to replace Emile Heskey, who has been largely ineffective in England’s first two group games.
Michael Carrick is expected to feature on the bench despite injuring an ankle on Sunday. Ledley King is ruled out with a groin problem.
Slovenia Team News v England
Centre-back Marko Suler is a doubt after injuring a rib in the 2-2 draw with the USA on Friday; Matej Mavric could start. Striker Necj Pecnik broke his ankle in the game with the USA and has been ruled out for the rest of the competition.
