John Lennon Killer Says He “Wanted To Be Somebody”

Mark Chapman Denied Parole For Sixth Time
The killer of John Lennon has said that he killed the former Beatle because he wanted to become “a somebody” and that his life had now changed because of Jesus.
Mark Chapman, now aged 55, shot and killed Lennon outside his New York apartment building in December 1980, but he has told a parole board in New York that he had a list of celebrities he wanted to kill and that Lennon was at the top of the list.
He said “I became a murderer and murderers are not somebodies”, according to a transcript of his interview last week in which he was denied parole for the sixth time.
The former security guard said that also on the list were actress Elizabeth Taylor and the American television talk show host Johnny Carson.
Chapman works as a porter and a clerk in a state prison but said that at the time he shot Lennon he wasn’t thinking clearly and had suffered bouts of depression.
“I made a horrible decision to end another human being’s life, for reasons of selfishness,” he said.
“I felt that by killing John Lennon I would become somebody and instead of that I became a murderer and murderers are not somebodies,” he said.
Chapman ended the interview by claiming he was now a religious person.
“My life has changed because of Jesus Christ,” he stated “I know him, he is with me, he is with me now, he is helping me speak to you now. Without him I am nothing, I would have been an even bigger nobody.”
Chapman was denied parole again as the board remained concerned about the disregard he showed for the norms of society and the sanctity of human life.
