Tottenham Transfer News and Rumours, Sunday 2 January

Spurs To Bid £1.5m For Pienaar

Spurs are set to bid £1.5 million for Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar.

Harry Redknapp was linked with the South African last summer as he looked for a way out of Goodison Park but with his deal set to expire at the end of the season Redknapp has been biding his time and is looking to put in a cut-price bid to land him this month.

However, Everton boss David Moyes is looking for at least £3 million for Pienaar, who has turned down the offer of a new deal at Goodison worth said to be worth around £55,000 a week.

Spurs Prepare For Beckham By Off-Loading Bentley

Spurs are preparing for the possible arrival of David Beckham by moving David Bentley on to Newcastle United, according to the Daily Mail.

The paper suggests that Alan Pardew is keen for the 26-year-old to link up with striker Andy Carroll and that Spurs are ready to take a big hit on the £15 million they paid Blackburn for Bentley in 2008.

The midfielder has found it difficult to hold down a regular first-team berth at White Hart Lane and the paper suggests that he may head to St James’s Park even if Spurs don’t manage to pull off the loan signing of Beckham this month.

Meanwhile, reports today of a loan move to Newcastle for Robbie Keane seem somewhat wide of the mark – at least for the time being.

Harry Redknapp has already ruled out a loan deal for the 30-year-old Irishman whom he is only willing to let go on a permanent move.

Newcastle have been reported in today’s News Of The World of being interested in loan deal for Keane this month leading to a permanent move in the summer if all goes well.

Spurs May Bid for Samba

The Sunday Mirror suggests that Spurs may also put in a bid for Blackburn defender Chris Samba.

The Congo international has been told he can leave Ewood Park after speaking out about Rovers’ owners’ dismissal of manager Sam Allardyce and Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is interested in signing him to plug the gaps in the centre of his defence.

Although Spurs have six central defenders Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King both have ongoing injury problems while William Gallas is finding the pace of the Premier League hard at 33 years old.

With the knockout stages of the Champions League looming Spurs are left with Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul and Sebastien Bassong at centre half.

Spurs Linked with Julio Baptista

Former Arsenal striker Julio Baptista could be on his way back to North London – only this time with Spurs.

The Brazilian – now with Serie A side Roma – has revealed that he has received an offer from an English club and TalkSport are speculating that club is Spurs.

“I have received something but there is nothing formal,” he told Canal Sur in Spain. “There is an offer from Brazil and one from England.” However, Baptista did reveal that he had had no offer from either of the Manchester clubs.

Baptista spent the 2006-07 season on loan at the Emirates and although he scored 10 times for the Gunners the majority of those were in Cup games.

Spurs Track Dutch Teenager

Spurs are one of a number of clubs trailing PSV Eindhoven’s teenage striker Luc Castaignos.

The 18-year-old has scored four times in 17 games in the Dutch top flight this season and is regarded as one of the Netherlands’ brightest young prospects having broken the national team’s goalscoring record at under-17 level.

Inter Milan and Valencia are also said to be interested in the youngster who is valued by PSV at around £4 million.

Rakitic Agent Hints At Spurs Interest

Spurs are believed to be interested in signing Schalke 04 midfielder Ivan Rakitic.

The 22-year-old Croatia international has been the subject of interest from Bolton Wanderers, Palermo and Juventus having decided not to sign a new contract with the Bundesliga side.

Rakitic signed for Schalke from Swiss side Basel in 2007 and has made over 100 appearances for the club, however, he is said to be out of favour at the Gelsenkirchen outfit.

His agent Max Ursheler has hinted that Spurs are one of a number of sides interested in Rakitic but says that no decision will be made before Christmas.

“I am flying out to see him to discuss his future,” Ursheler said on Monday.

“We do not know at this moment what Ivan’s decision will be and where he will end up. We will have time to have a discussion at Christmas and we will go from there.

“Tottenham Hotspur is a really good club and Harry Redknapp is a very good manager. I know Harry well and I have known him for a long time, but for the moment we do not make a decision, it is too earlier because Ivan is concentrating on Schalke. We must have a discussion and then look to make a decision in two weeks.”

Spurs Re-kinlde Interest In Sessegnon

Meanwhile, Spurs are one of a number of clubs interested in Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Stephane Sessegnon.

Spurs were linked with the Benin international during the summer but were put off by PSG’s high valuation. Now it is believed that Harry Redknapp has made another formal enquiry for the 26-year-old but is facing competition for his signature from Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham and Everton.

“A departure is possible,” Sessegnon’s agent admitted on Monday. “And if so, the best option remains the Premier League. It is there that he wants to play.”

Spurs Linked With Bilbao Defender

Tottenham are being linked with Athletic Bilbao defender Andoni Iraola.

The right-back has a reputation for scoring goals having hit 28 goals since breaking into the Athletic first team in 2003.

The 28-year-old has a £25 million release clause in his contract but his current deal with La Liga side expires in 2012 and Athletic could be prepared to accept a bid of around £12 million before they will part company with Iraola.

Reports from Europe suggest that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is looking for defensive reinforcements for the knockout stages of the Champions League having been disappointed with Alan Hutton and Vedrun Corluka and has targeted Iraola.

Spurs Ready To Sign Pienaar

Spurs are believed to be on the verge of a deal that will bring Everton’s Steven Pienaar to White Hart Lane.

The 28-year-old South African was said yesterday to be ready to sign for Inter Milan but today’s Daily Mail suggests he will link up with Harry Redknapp. It is not yet clear whether Pienaar will sign in January for a nominal fee or on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Spurs were in talks with Pienaar during the close season when a move away from Goodison Park were first mooted for the South African but despite being offered a new £55,000-a-week deal at Everton Pienaar has decided his future lies away from the club. Everton boss David Moyes has also accepted the fact Pienaar is about to move on.

Spurs In Pack For Pogrebnyak

Reports today suggest that Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak is taking English lessons ahead of a move to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has fallen out with his boss at Stuttgart, Jens Keller, and is looking for a move to England. Spurs are interested but Blackburn Rovers, Everton, Aston Villa and Liverpool are also said to be keen on the 6ft 2 striker.

Pogrebnyak joined Stuttgart from Zenit St Petersburg at the start of last season and has scored 13 times in 47 games for the German outfit.

Scott Parker

Spurs ‘Offer £8m For Parker’

The Daily Express reports that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has put in an improved offer of £8 million for West Ham’s Scott Parker and that the midfielder is ready to quit Upton Park in January.

Spurs had a bid for Parker turned down during the summer after the Hammers’ owners, David Sullivan and David Gold, said that all their squad was up for sale – but with the exception of Parker.

The paper quotes what it describes as ‘a West Ham source’ as saying “The fact is the player wants to take his career on to another level at Spurs and there is no point in keeping an unsettled footballer.”

West Ham’s response to interest in Parker during the summer was to offer him a new four-year deal at Upton Park but with the club at the bottom of the Premier League again after yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland, rumours of Parker’s departure have again surfaced.

Tottenham Transfer News and Rumours, Sunday 5 December

City Linked With Bale Swap Bid

Manchester City are being linked with a £45 million bid for Spurs midfielder Gareth Bale.

According to goal.com – and today’s News of the World who are suggesting a deal worth £60 million – City are set to offer Emmanuel Adebayor and Joleon Lescott to Spurs in a bid to tempt them to part with their star player.

However the website suggests that Spurs are unlikely to part with Bale with a source at White Hart Lane quoted as saying “There is more chance of us getting relegated this season than selling Gareth Bale. Don’t worry, he is going nowhere.”

Adebayor has already been linked this week with a January move to Spurs.

Fulham And Villa Interested In Keane

Robbie Keane

Fulham and Aston Villa are in the running to sign Spurs striker Robbie Keane after boss Harry Redknapp said on Friday that he could go in the January transfer window.

Redknapp ruled out a loan move stating that whoever offered the most money for Keane in January would probably land his signature. That has led the Sunday People to speculate that both Fulham and Villa were leading the race to sign him. Relations between Fulham and Spurs are said to be poor after Spurs signed Peter Crouch from under Fulham’s noses last year while Villa have been eyeing up a move for Keane since last summer.

The Irishman was linked with a move to the Vancouver Whitecaps, who will be playing in Major League Soccer next summer, but Redknapp denied on Friday that there had been any talks with the Canadian club.

Kranjcar Loan Deal Set To Fail

Everton’s bid to sign Spurs’ Niko Kranjcar looks set to fall at the first hurdle.

The Croat is set to leave White Hart Lane in January and both Everton and Liverpool are among the clubs said to be interested. Everton are interested in doing a loan deal but despite Spurs’ loan fee of around £3 million it appears that is beyond Everton’s means at the moment.

Bayern Munich and Newcastle are also said to be interested.

Spurs Linked With Adebayor Bid

Spurs are being linked with a surprise bid for Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor. The Togo international looks set for a move to Serie A side Juventus in January with terms for a loan spell supposedly agreed ahead of a permanent switch next summer, but The Sun reports that Tottenham are keen to hijack the Juve deal with a source at the club telling the paper that the club had a real chance, though it depends on who pays his wages.

Adebayor is on an estimated £160,000 a week at City and there were reports last week that the club was reluctant to subsidise the wages on any of their want-away high-earners.

The Sun quotes their sources at White Hart Lane as saying “City expect us to pay the bulk but the big question is how far our board are prepared to go.”

Spurs Linked With Bosnian Striker

Meanwhile, reports from Germany suggest that Spurs are willing to pay Bundesliga side Hoffenheim 8 million euros for Bosnian striker Vedad Ibisevic. The 26-year-old has scored four goals this term including two in a 4-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt ten days ago.

Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool: Redknapp Hails Modric

Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool: Redknapp Hails Modric

Redknapp Praises Spurs Recovery

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has paid tribute to Luka Modric after the Croatian winger inspired Tottenham to an injury-time win over Liverpool at White Hart Lane.

Modric put in another superb performance, mesmerising the Liverpool defence and laying on the equaliser as Spurs went fifth in the Premier League table with a 2-1 win.

Spurs went a goal behind three minutes before half-time when Martin Skrtel stabbed the ball home after his initial header rebounded back to him off David Ngog.

Skrtel was to score the equaliser on 65 minutes when he turned Modric’s cross past Pepe Reina just six minutes after Jermain Defoe had missed a penalty.

Liverpool lost Jamie Carragher four minutes from the end of normal time when he was taken off with a dislocated shoulder and were caught out in the second minute of injury time when a long ball from Assou-Ekoto was played on by Crouch to Aaron Lennon who calmly slotted past Reina.

After the game Redknapp praised Liverpool but pointed out that his side have now taken 16 points from losing positions this season and he singled out Modric for praise.

“He’s a world class player – a manager’s dream – he comes in, he works hard, he’s a fantastic footballer – he’s got everything for me.

“He could play in any team in the world.”

Redknapp felt the performance was soured a little by losing Rafael van der Vaart to a hamstring injury in the first half while Younis Kaboul will be seen by the Spurs medical staff tomorrow after going off with a torn hip muscle.

For Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson, while he was happy with his side’s performance the loss of Carragher and the manner his side conceded the winner came as a blow:

“It’s a really sad thing for us; first we lose Steven Gerrard, now we’ve lost Jamie Carragher. We need those players, quite frankly, because we’re still bedding in a lot of players who’ve come into the team.

He added: “We were in a little disarray after Jamie’s injury and to lose to such a simple ploy where the ball is hoisted forward to catch the back four unaware – that and Lennon’s pace – it’s a very, very sad way for us to go away from here with nothing.”

For Redknapp, though, the win caps a great week in which his side beat Arsenal at the Emirates, qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League and came back to defeat Liverpool, their fourth home win on the trot against the Mersey giants.

“We’re a good team, “ he said, “we’re exciting and anyone who comes here to watch us will get value for money.”

Redknapp Denies Benzema Rumours

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has denied reports that Spurs are looking to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

“There’s nothing in that,” Redknapp told TalkSport on Monday. “He’s a good player, I like him; he looks a real talent. But certainly we haven’t made any enquires at all for him. There’s definitely nothing going on there at the moment.”

Redknapp also added that he will have to sell before he can buy.

“Before we can bring anyone in, I’ve spoke with the chairman, we need to shift one or two,” he said. “It’s going to be a case of the only way we can do any business would be to let one or two go and whatever we get in we can go and invest.”

Robbie Keane and Niko Kranjcar are both tipped to leave White Hart Lane in January.

Scott Parker

Spurs Keen On Benzema and Parker

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is keen to take Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema on loan in January, according to a number of papers today.

The 23-year-old has scored just 11 goals in 49 games since his move to La Liga from French side Lyon at the beginning of last season. Redknapp is looking to add one or two faces to his squad in January, though it is also likely that some players will leave Spurs.

“We need to tweak it to finish it off,” Redknapp said at the weekend. “I think Tottenham have a championship in them in the next few years. Just because they haven’t for a while, it doesn’t mean that Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal or Liverpool will carry on winning it.”

It is also being reported today that Redknapp is set to test West Ham’s resolve to hold on to midfielder Scott Parker (pictured). Redknapp put in a bid of around £8 million for Parker during the summer only to be rebuffed by the Hammers’ joint-owners, David Sullivan and David Gold, who said that Parker was the only member of their squad not for sale.

Kranjcar Liverpool Move Could Be Hijacked By Hamburg

Niko Kranjcar’s transfer to Liverpool could be hijacked by Bundesliga side SV Hamburg. German website 4-4-2.com reports that the German outfit could be set to make a loan bid for the Spurs winger, who is set to leave the club having found first-team football hard to come by at White Hart Lane.

Liverpool are reportedly ready to make a £7 million bid for the Croatian who is also on Everton’s radar, but reports from Germany suggest he could be on his way to Hamburg in a January loan move.

Meanwhile, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp says he is determine to extract a good price for Kranjcar, who moved to Spurs in a £2 million deal from Portsmouth in 2008.

“We’re not going to gift Niko away – he’s a top player in my opinion,” said Redknapp.

Bentley Linked With Fulham Move as Redknapp Mulls Enrique Bid

David Bentley is being linked with a January move to Fulham. The 26-year-old is also out of Redknapp’s plans and there are reports that he could be about to link up with Mark Hughes at Craven Cottage. Hughes managed Bentley during his time at Blackburn.

Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp is being linked with a January move for Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique. The Spurs boss has reportedly been impressed with his attacking partnership with Jonas Gutierrez and wants the Spaniard to link up with Gareth Bale.

Kranjcar Set To Exit Spurs

Niko Kranjcar is set to leave Spurs in January with Everton and Liverpool both vying for his signature.

Competition for places at White Hart Lane has left Kranjcar on the sidelines for much of the season and his father Zlatko, currently manager of Montenegro, has confirmed that Niko will be on his way out of Spurs in the new year.

“He’ll be leaving for certain,” Zlatko said. “As of January Niko will no longer be a Tottenham player. It’s his decision. There really is no point in sitting on the bench all the time. This is really belittling him.”

Spurs want at least £4 million for Kranjcar and Zlatko said that there are two offers on the table. “Niko has two offers – one from Italy and one from England. I can’t say who from because that could jeopardise the deal.”

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has money to spend and has Kranjcar and Manchester City’s Shaun Wright-Phillips among his targets while Everton are also said to be interested.

Spurs Keen On Fulham Youngster

Spurs are said to be interested in Fulham teenager Keanu Marsh-Brown. The 18-year-old winger, who is also said to be a target for Manchester City, is out of contract at the end of the season but after some involvement in last season’s Europa League campaign at Craven Cottage he has found opportunities difficult to come by under Mark Hughes. A fee of £500,000 could secure Marsh-Brown’s signature.

Spurs Olympics Plan Blasted By UK Athletics

Spurs Olympics Plan Blasted By UK Athletics

Athletics Chief Slams Spurs’ Football-Only Plan for Stadium

UK Athletics have slammed Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to take over the Olympic Stadium after the London games of 2012.

Spurs plan to remove the athletics track to create an 80,000-seat stadium but UKA chairman Ed Warner has described the plan as “completely unacceptable.”

Along with West Ham United, Spurs have been short-listed as preferred bidders to take over the stadium following the 2012 Olympics but whereas Spurs want to remove the athletics track to create an 80,000-seat arena the West Ham proposal, made in conjunction with Newham Council, is to retain the athletics track in a 60,000-capacity venue for football, athletics, concerts and community use.

Mr Warner has told the BBC that he believes Spurs, along with their co-bidders the American entertainment group AEG should go back to the 2005 plans to maintain athletics at the stadium once the games have ended.

“That was about UK Athletics being at the heart of the Olympic Park,” Mr Warner said.

“Tottenham and AEG have made it clear that they will rip up the track and make it a football only venue and that is hugely concerning to me,” he added.

“There was a promise made back in 2005 by London 2012 chief Lord Coe to bring the Olympics to London.

“The greatest city in the world deserves a facility that is capable of hosting world championships and major athletics events. That is really the legacy we need from the Games for our sport.

Mr Warner also said the Spurs proposal to offer what he described as a “small amount of seating” to the warm-up track or upgrading an existing facility elsewhere were “very inferior” to the West Ham/Newham proposal which Mr Warner says he supports.

“Britain has a history of letting down the IOC and the IAAF in not delivering on promises on athletics,” added Mr Warner, urging Spurs to re-think their proposal.

“I think it was instrumental in the Games coming here that that promise was made and if Britain reneges it would be a very sorry state of affairs.”

Peter Crouch

Crouch Linked With £8m Move Away

Peter Crouch is being linked with an £8 million move away from Spurs in January.

The big striker scored his first goal in the Premier League this season in Tottenham’s 4-2 win over Blackburn yesterday despite having hit five goals in the Champions League and manager Harry Redknapp is concerned about Crouch’s apparent inability to play alongside summer signing Rafael van de Vaart.

Redknapp would prefer to sell Robbie Keane or Roman Pavlyuchenko but has received only loan bids for Keane and cut-price offers for Pavlyuchenko. An £8 million bid for Crouch would get the go-ahead from Redknapp providing he can re-invest the money in the squad.

Lennon Linked With Move As Spurs Step Up Young Pursuit

However, the Sunday People reports that Aaron Lennon could also be on his way out of White Hart Lane as Spurs step up their pursuit of Aston Villa winger Ashley Young.

Spurs were said to be interested in the 25-year-old Young during the close season and rumours of a forthcoming bid began to circulate last month when Young suddenly stalled on talks with Villa about an improved £75,000-a-week contract. Liverpool were also said to be interested but Spurs remain the favourites and it could be that Lennon would be sold to partially finance any deal for Young.

Life In London Suits The van der Vaarts

Meanwhile Rafael van der Vaart’s wife Sylvie has said how happy they are with life in London, and that has been reflected in her husband’s performances on the pitch.

“Rafa has found his place and his happiness. This is why he is in the best form of his life.” The couple have found a house in Herfordshire and have settled into life in the UK.

Andy Carroll

Spurs Ready To Offer £10m Plus Keane For Carroll

Spurs are ready to offer £10 million plus Roy Keane in order to secure the signature of Newcastle striker Andy Carroll, according to Goal.com.

The website reports sources close to the player as suggesting that recent stories about his private life could lead to him moving away from Newcastle in order to settle down.

After scoring 19 times last season as the Toon stormed to the Championship title, Carroll has hit seven goals in the opening 12 games of this season leading to calls for him to be included in the England team to face France later this month. But despite signing a five-year contract only last month but Newcastle owner Mike Ashley could be tempted to cash in on his star player while Harry Redknapp is a known admirer of Carroll having made an attempt to sign him during the summer.

Redknapp is believed to be in the market for a striker who likes to play on his own up front and Carroll fits that particular bill and Spurs could be ready to offer Robbie Keane as part of the deal in order to bring Carroll to White Hart Lane.

Manchester United and Liverpool are also said to be keeping tabs on the striker.

Spurs Report Increase In Profits

Spurs Report Increase In Profits

http://twitter.com/cbay_transfers

Tottenham Hotspur have reported an operating profit of £22.7 million for the year to 30 June 2010, a 23% increase on the previous year.

Group turnover for the year was £119.8m with gate receipts up from £19.8 million to £20.1 million with White Hart Lane sold out for all Premier League home games. Spurs’ Season Ticket Waiting List currently stands at 33,000 registered and paid-up members.

Media and broadcasting revenues increased by 15% to £51.5m reflecting a higher merit award from the Premier League for finishing in fourth place as well as an increase in the number of games featuring the club that were televised during the season.

Commenting on the figures chairman Daniel Levy said:

“This period has seen the Club produce a record turnover and a 23% increase in operating profit.

“We are benefiting now from our investment to date in the First Team squad. Our challenge is to accrue further benefits from our investment in capital projects in order to lay the strongest foundations for the future stability and prosperity of the Club.”

The club said that the estimated cost of redeveloping White Hart Lane had risen by £50 million as a result of amendments to the design, including retaining heritage buildings and constructing a raised piazza. Spurs have also applied to move eight miles to the site of the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 games.

Spurs ‘Ready To Sell Bentley and Kranjcar’

Spurs could be ready to offload David Bentley and Niko Kranjcar as boss Harry Redknapp raises cash to bring in new players, according to the Mail On Sunday.

The paper claims that Redknapp has been given approval by chairman Daniel Levy to sell Bentley, despite having to take a huge loss on the £15 million Spurs spent on the midfielder two years ago.

Fulham boss Mark Hughes, who managed Bentley at Blackburn, is said to be keen to take the 26-year-old to Craven Cottage while the paper claims that Kranjcar is a target for both Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Bentley and Kranjcar both featured in Spurs’ 4-2 defeat at Bolton on Saturday, a result which some sources are claiming was the final straw for Redknapp as he tries to put together another push for Champions League football. The defeat puts Spurs into sixth place in the Premier League table, one place below Bolton.

Bale – I’m Happy Where I Am

The Gareth Bale rumour mill is once again in overdrive following his performance in Spurs’ 3-1 win over Inter Milan on Tuesday.

The Sun claims that both Real Madrid and Barcelona are “talking about £50 million bids” for the young midfielder while the Daily Mirror claims that Inter themselves are readying a bid for the 21-year-old. The Mirror quotes the Italian paper Corriere dello Sport as saying that the Italian champions are ready to pay £20-30 million for Bale.

However, The Sun quotes Bale as saying that he is going nowhere. “I am very happy at Tottenham and don’t see the need to move anywhere else,” Bale is quoted in the newspaper.

He added that he is already playing on the biggest stage in football and doesn’t see why he should have any reason to leave.

Spurs Keep Eye On Roux

Meanwhile Spurs are keeping an eye on French striker Nolan Roux, according to the Mirror. The 23-year-old has scored six goals in 11 games this season for Brest who are currently top of the French League.

Inter To Step Up Bale Interest

Inter Milan look set to step up their interest in Spurs’ Gareth Bale, according to TalkSport.

However, there is feeling that Bale may already be out of the financial reach of the European champions with Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport quoting club president Massimo Moratti as saying “Bale was incredible in the San Siro, but who knows how much he would cost now” – and that was before his performance against them last night.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is keen to sign Inter’s Sully Muntari, a player he had while he was manager of Portsmouth, and Inter would be keen to do a player-plus-cash deal involving Bale and Muntari, but Redknapp would undoubtedly be keen to hang on to his current star player.
