Newcastle United Transfer News and Rumours, Tuesday 28 December
Carroll Pledges Future to Newcastle
Andy Carroll has pledged his future to Newcastle United, though it remains to be seen whether the club’s owners will want to cash in on him.
The news came from Toon boss Alan Pardew who said that Carroll informed him on Christmas Day that he has no intentions of leaving the club he supported as a boy.
Carroll has been linked with Spurs, Manchester City and Chelsea in recent weeks but in a training ground exchange Pardew was told that a move away from St James’s Park was furthest away from Carroll’s mind.
“I spoke to Andy on Christmas Day,” said Pardew. “I asked him what he wanted to do; if he wanted to stay.
“I said to Andy, ‘I do not want to talk for you; we are talking together. If you remain here it is great news for us. But it is important that you want to stay.’
“Wanting to stay was the case that Andy put to me and it is great news because we will make sure he does. That is why I am so confident there will be no problem with Andy in January – or, hopefully, next summer, the following January and the summer after that. He is handling all the speculation very well but the most important thing is that Andy wants to play for Newcastle United.”
Carroll has been in impressive form scoring 11 times in the first half of the season as Newcastle have consolidated their position in the Premier League.
‘Villa In Barton Move’ – Report
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail speculates that Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier will make a move for Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton.
Houllier is confident he can prise the tempestuous midfielder away from St James’s Park but Alan Pardew wants to hold on to Barton and is ready to offer him a new contract, while Barton himself said recently that he wants to spend the rest of his career at Newcastle.
Taylor Delighted With New Deal
Newcastle defender Steven Taylor says he is delighted to have signed a new contract with Newcastle.
The former England under-21 star signed a five-and-a-half year deal at St James’s Park after months of speculation and says the future looks bright for the club and its young players.
“The club are going forward now,” he said. “A few players have signed five-year contracts.
“I wanted stability at this football club, and they have proved they wanted me for the next five and a half years.
“That is all I cared about. There is a structure at this football club and I am happy with that.
Pardew Stresses Continuity As He Begins Backroom Appointments
Alan Pardew has moved quickly to begin appointing his backroom staff at Newcastle United.
The new boss has today appointed Andy Woodman as goalkeeping coach. Woodman joins from Charlton Athletic where he was appointed goalkeeping coach during Pardew’s management spell at the club in 2007. Prior to that he was Pardew’s goalkeeping coach at West Ham United. The two were team-mates at Crystal Palace in the late-eighties and early-nineties when Woodman was part of the club’s youth set-up when Pardew was a first-team regular. He went on to spend a good part of his career at Northampton Town.
Pardew has also stressed that there will be a strong element of continuity at the club and has moved reserve-team assistant Steve Stone and senior Academy coach into first-team roles at the club.
“Steve Stone is somebody I have leant on heavily in the last few days, and I have really enjoyed my time working with him, even if it has been short,” Pardew said.
“I am going to give him an improved contract to come and work with the first team. He has the respect of the players and I always want continuity when I come into a club.”
Stone was appointed assistant to Peter Beardsley after Beardsley was appointed reserve-team coach in July; prior to that he had worked with the club’s academy players. Beardsley has opted to remain with the reserves.
Willie Donachie joined Newcastle as Assistant Director at the club’s academy in December last year. The one-time Manchester City defender assisted Joe Royle at Oldham, helping the team into the top flight
Pardew said: “With continuity in mind as well as I am going to move Willie Donachie up to the first-team area from the Academy. He will work with Peter Beardsley and maybe cross over to myself on occasion.
“We also have room for one more coach and I am still working on that. I’ve got about four or five names and I am not sure which one yet – I have to get the balance right.”
Meanwhile, Pardew has scotched rumours that the Toon are about to do a loan deal for USA star Landon Donovan.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has paid tribute to his players after their 3-1 victory over Liverpool this evening.
“It was a great result,” Pardew told the BBC after the match.
“I’ve had a really heavy two or three days but the players’ response – I couldn’t have asked for more. The spirit that they had already was great to see.”
Fans demonstrated against owner Mike Ashley before the game and Pardew was given a muted response when he emerged from the tunnel to take his place in the dug-out, but his team did the talking for him. Scouser Kevin Nolan opened the scoring for Newcastle on 15 minutes slotting home from an Andy Carroll header, and though Liverpool equalised through Dirk Kuyt early in the second half Newcastle finished the stronger of the two sides.
Joey Barton restored their lead with 10 minutes to go before a low drive from Carroll sealed the victory in injury time.
There were more anti-Ashley chants at the final whistle and Pardew admitted after the game that he was nervous today because of the circumstances surrounding the sacking of Chris Hughton on Monday.
“Chris was much-loved here. To replace him with someone from London – they’ve had that thrown at them, the owners – so it’s difficult. But you know I’m a professional manager and I just had to do the job as best I could. We changed a couple of things and they worked OK for us today.
“But for me it was the spirit of the group that got us the victory. To score three goals against Liverpool – only Man United and Man City have done that – it just goes to show we’ve got assets in the team. With Andy Carroll if we play to his assets we can win a lot of games.”
And Pardew admitted that he will have a job to win over the Newcastle fans.
“I’m not going to go out in the middle of the pitch clapping the fans. They don’t trust and know what I can do. I do have faith in my ability as a manager and with this group of players the response I’ve had has been very, very positive.
“When we conceded the equaliser we didn’t sit back, we kept going at Liverpool and got our reward.”

“Carroll Not For Sale” Says Pardew
Alan Pardew says he has been told that Newcastle won’t be selling their £15 million-rated striker Andy Carroll.
On his first day as Newcastle manager Pardew told reporters: “Andy Carroll’s future was one of the items at the top of my agenda. He needs to stay.”
He added: “The Newcastle No9 shirt is legendary and he’s shown he’s big enough to wear it.
“It would be a massive, massive blow if he left but I am sure he will stay. He is our No9. He is someone the fans have bought into.
“As long as I am here, I will be doing everything I can to make sure Andy stays. In the short term, he is staying. And he has just signed a new contract for five years. I have had reassurances about that, 100%. He is staying here.”
Pardew added that he would be looking at the squad players: “Who have you got to come off the bench and make an impact?” he said.
“I will be looking at that very closely. With that window just around the corner, I will be concentrating on that.”
Joey Barton For West Ham?
Meanwhile, there are reports today that Joey Barton could be on his way out of St James’s Park.
The Daily Mirror suggests that the midfielder’s future could be in doubt with Pardew’s arrival and that he has been identified by West Ham as someone who could assist in their fight against relegation.
Barton would cost the Hammers around £5 million but with Scott Parker seemingly heading for the exit at Upton Park and with Newcastle having just limited funds for the January transfer market.
Newcastle United Appoint Pardew Manager On Five-And-A-Half Year Deal
Alan Pardew has been appointed manager of Newcastle United. The former Reading, Charlton and West Ham boss joins Newcastle on a contract that expires in the summer of 2016.
Pardew, who has been out of work since being sacked by Southampton at the end of August, said he was “honoured and privileged to have been given this opportunity at Newcastle United, one of the truly great clubs in English football.”
Rumours of Pardew replacing the popular Chris Hughton, who was sacked by Newcastle on Monday, had underwhelmed Newcastle fans and Pardew immediately went on the charm offensive to win the fans back over.
“I understand what this club means to its supporters. Throughout the football world people recognise that this is a unique club in many ways, with supporters who are second to none in their loyalty, passion and devotion for the team.”
Hughton was sacked because the Newcastle board wanted somebody with more Premier League experience although Pardew’s managerial experience in the top flight has been limited to a season-and-a-half at West Ham and a disastrous half-season at Charlton that ended in relegation.
“I’m not a Geordie of course, but I’m a football person with a love of the game and I can assure you I bring great drive, desire and commitment to the job,” he said.
“Chris Hughton did a great job last season, guiding the club back to the Premier League, and he continued that good work this season. It is my aim to build on that now and take this club forward.
“I have always managed teams that have played attacking positive football, something I know the supporters here appreciate.
“At the same time I intend to focus on developing exciting young players through the club’s excellent academy and development squad, and I know the board here at St James’ Park are very committed to that too.
“I can’t wait to get started and what better way to kick-off than welcoming Liverpool to St James’ Park on Saturday.”
Pardew is believed to be a friend of both Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and the club’s managing director Derek Llambias and is believed to have begun talks about taking over as Newcastle boss during the course of last week.
The big surprise is the length of the contract – at five-and-a-half years he will be the fourth-longest serving Premier League manager if he sees out his term.
Pardew Odds-On Favourite for Newcastle United Manager
Odds Shorten On Pardew As Jol Drops Out Of Race
Alan Pardew is now the hot favourite to become the next manager of Newcastle United.
The former Reading, Charlton and West Ham boss was being quoted at 1/9 favourite by Ladbrokes on Wednesday with Alan Curbishley and Ray Wilkins at 10/1 and Martin Jol at 12/1. Jol pretty much ruled himself out of the race on Tuesday with some reports suggesting he wasn’t interested in working for Newcastle after the way they had treated Chris Hughton. The two worked together until Jol was sacked by Spurs in 2007. Jol left Ajax on Monday, a matter of hours after Hughton parted company with Newcastle.
There were reports on Wednesday morning that Pardew has already spoken to Newcastle and that talks began as long ago as the beginning of last week. The 49-year-old is apparently close friends with both Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and the club’s managing director Derek Llambias.
Pardew has been out of work since being sacked by League One side Southampton in August.
Campbell Says Hughton Sacking Will Hit Newcastle Players Hard
Bookies Suspend Betting On Newcastle Job
Newcastle defender Sol Campbell has spoken of his dismay at the sacking of manager Chris Hughton.
The veteran centre-back was brought in by Hughton at the start of the season and made his first Premier League start for the club in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the end of November. However, he says the players will be badly affected by Hughton’s departure.
“Chris is such a lovely guy – top man. This will hit the players hard,” he told ESPNSoccernet.
“The players admired him, and liked him, and won’t be happy now he’s gone like this.”
He added: “You have got to ask yourself why this has happened because it makes no sense. Here is a guy who has done an unbelievable job. He got the club back into the Premier league and any manager would have been rewarded for that with a new contract – but Chris wasn’t.
“The players are sure to be asking themselves ‘what the hell is going on?’, that is only natural.”
Hughton was sacked yesterday despite a solid mid-table start to Newcastle’s first season back in the Premier League. Reserve team boss and former Newcastle player Peter Bearsdley has been put in temporary charge along with Steve Stone as the Toon begin the search for a successor. Former Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill was the bookies’ favourite immediately after Hughton’s sacking but Martin Jol’s departure from Ajax last night made him hot favourite. Alan Pardew is believed to be in the running though bookies have now stopped taking bets on the outcome with Pardew and Jol believed to be the only two names in the frame.
There have been reports that Hughton was too easily swayed by some of the senior players in the dressing room and there are also suggestions that whoever gets the manager’s job will be told that the club are ready to sell £15 million-rated striker Andy Carroll. The 21-year-old is said to be particularly devastated at Hughton’s departure as the two had a close working relationship.
Hughton himself declined to comment last night other than to say the matter was now in the hands of the League Managers Association.
Martin Jol New Favourite For Newcastle Job After Ajax Departure
Jol Leaves Ajax ‘By Mutual Consent’
Former Spurs boss Martin Jol has fuelled rumours of a return to the Premier League by leaving Ajax on Monday evening “by mutual consent.” Jol’s odds to be appointed manager of Newcastle United have plummeted this evening from 40/1 to 4/6.
Newcastle sacked manager Chris Hughton this afternoon after 14 months in the job. In a statement on the club’s official website, Newcastle said “Regrettably the board now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward.
Ironically, Hughton was formerly assistant manager to Jol when Jol was sacked by Spurs in 2007.
Jol was red-hot favourite to succeed Roy Hodgson as manager of Fulham this summer buy Ajax refused to release him from his contract and gave Jol certain assurances about the size of his transfer budget. However, in a statement of the Ajax website this evening, Rik van den Boog CEO of Ajax said Jol felt there was an “insufficient basis for cooperation with Ajax to continue successfully.”
Jol is now favourite to land the job of manager at Newcastle. Martin O’Neill was favourite in the early betting but he has drifted out to 5/1 third favourite, behind Jol and Alan Pardew. Former West Ham boss Pardew has already said that he is interested in the Newcastle job.
Martin O’Neill Favourite As Hughton Leaves Newcastle
Hughton Leaves Newcastle Despite Steady Start to Season
Martin O’Neill is the bookies’ favourite to become the next manager of Newcastle United after the club parted company with Chris Hughton today. Goalkeeping coach Paul Barron has also left the club.
Hughton was sacked after a solid start to the season which saw the Toon in a respectable 11th place in the Premier League despite yesterday’s 3-1 defeat at West Brom.
Newcastle began the season with a 6-0 victory over Aston Villa and also defeated arch-rivals Sunderland, 5-1, but after a recent 5-1 reversal at Bolton and yesterday’s defeat at West Brom, owner Mike Ashley has decided to part company with Hughton along with goalkeeping coach Paul Barron.
A statement on the club’s official website thanked Hughton and praised his “character and commitment” since he was appointed in October 2009 but added:
“Regrettably the board now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward.
“The task of appointing a new manager now begins. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor.”
Martin O’Neill has immediately been installed as the bookies’ favourite to take over from Hughton with odds of 3-1 at Ladbrokes this afternoon. The former Celtic boss has been out of work since leaving Aston Villa at the start of the season.
Alan Pardew is at 9/2 with former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley at 7-1 and Bolton manager Owen Coyle at 9-1.
Hughton moved into coaching in 1993 after a playing career that spanned 16 years with Spurs, West Ham and Brentford.
He was assistant manager under Martin Jol but left when Jol was sacked in October 2007. Four months later he joined Newcastle as coach under Kevin Keegan and was appointed caretaker manager after the club was relegated from the Premier League in 2009. That appointment was made permanent in October 2009 and Hughton led Newcastle back to the Premier League during his first season in charge.
Newcastle United: New Deals for Williamson and Ranger
Ranger and Williamson Sign Deals To 2016
Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson and striker Nile Ranger have both signed new deals that will keep them at St James’s Park until 2016.
The 27-year-old Williamson has been almost ever-present in the side this year as the Toon have made a solid start to life back in the Premier League. He joined Newcastle from Portsmouth in January for an undisclosed fee after making no appearances for the south coast side. He has also played for Watford, Wycombe, Southampton and Torquay.
Williamson said he was delighted to sign a new long-term deal. “I’ve played in the lower leagues before, so to get the opportunity to play at St. James’ Park every other week – and grounds like The Emirates and Old Trafford – is fantastic for me,” he said.
“Me and my family have settled here quickly and it’s great to know that we’ll be staying here for a long time to come.”
The 19-year-old Ranger is a product of the club’s academy having joined from the Southampton academy in 2008. He scored twice in 25 Championship games last season though his only goal of this season came in the 4-3 Carling Cup tie at Chelsea.
Ranger said he was “buzzing” at the new deal. “I’m loving it at Newcastle.,” he said. “I really feel I can develop here and I can only learn from some of the players here.
“The fans have been great with me from day one, and even though I’d spent my whole life down south until I came here, this feels like home now.”
Newcastle’s Andy Carroll is fit to line-up against Bolton today. There were fears that after picking up a slight groin strain during last weekend’s clash with Fulham that Carroll would not be fit either for England’s game with France on Wednesday or Newcastle’s clash with the Wanderers at the Reebok.
Newcastle urged the England set-up to be cautious in their use of Carroll but he came through 72 minutes unscathed and Toon boss Chris Hughton says his side can only gain from Carroll’s international experience. “Andy playing in the senior side is something we all wanted,” Hughton said on Friday.
Meanwhile, Bolton boss Owen Coyle has urged his side to be wary of the twin threats of Carroll and also former Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan, who made almost 350 appearances for the Wanderers.
“Kevin’s a terrific player, very gifted and has that rare ability to score a lot of goals from midfield. He will be very motivated to do well coming back to a club where he made a huge impact and football tends to throw up intriguing storylines on these occasions.
Coyle added: “We have to be wary of Andy Carroll in the way you have to be wary of Torres and Drogba.
“His elevation to the England squad will have raised his confidence levels even higher.
Newcastle United have contracted the FA over Fabio Capello’s decision to play striker Andy Carroll in tonight’s England game with France.
Newcastle’s medical staff are believed to have assessed Carroll before he met up with the rest of the England squad but there are concerns over a groin injury he picked up in the Toon’s goalless draw with Fulham on Saturday.
United have since emailed the Football Association “expressing their concern” although it is believed that the email stopped short of asking that Carroll be withdrawn from the side, as some outlets are reporting.
England boss Fabio Capello said after Tuesday’s training session that Carroll was fit to play in the game at Wembley and also announced that he expected him to start in the France game along with Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson and Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs. It will be Carroll’s first game for England and he is thought to be desperate to play, but Newcastle are said to be concerned over his longer-term fitness and fear he may aggravate the groin strain he picked up on Saturday.
Carroll has hit seven goals for Newcastle so far this season. United travel to Bolton on Saturday and already have injury concerns over Shola Ameobi.
Spurs are ready to offer £10 million plus Roy Keane in order to secure the signature of Newcastle striker Andy Carroll, according to Goal.com.
The website reports sources close to the player as suggesting that recent stories about his private life could lead to him moving away from Newcastle in order to settle down.
After scoring 19 times last season as the Toon stormed to the Championship title, Carroll has hit seven goals in the opening 12 games of this season leading to calls for him to be included in the England team to face France later this month. But despite signing a five-year contract only last month but Newcastle owner Mike Ashley could be tempted to cash in on his star player while Harry Redknapp is a known admirer of Carroll having made an attempt to sign him during the summer.
Redknapp is believed to be in the market for a striker who likes to play on his own up front and Carroll fits that particular bill and Spurs could be ready to offer Robbie Keane as part of the deal in order to bring Carroll to White Hart Lane.
Manchester United and Liverpool are also said to be keeping tabs on the striker.
Newcastle and Everton are looking to snap up Spurs’s Nico Kranjcar. The Croatian midfielder has been squeezed out at White Hart Lane following the deadline-day signing of Rafael van de Vaart and both the Toon and the Toffees are seeking to give Kranjcar the opportunity of some first-team action.
Everton are said to be ready to offer Steven Pienaar to Spurs in a player-swap deal with Tottenham. Contract negotiations between Pienaar and Everton have stalled with the Goodison Park outfit refusing to offer any more than the £55,000-a-week deal that has been on the table since before the start of the season.
Meanwhile Kranjcar gave notice of what he is capable of last night when he scored both his side’s goals in Croatia’s 2-1 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Israel. Kranjcar scored with a penalty on 36 minutes before adding a second five minutes later with a free-kick. The win sees Croatia go top of the group ahead of Greece and Georgia.

Newcastle Sign French Teenager
Newcastle United have signed French teenager Yven Moyo on a four-year contract.
The 18-year-old appeared in the Toon’s reserve team game with Wolves on Monday night and has signed on a free. Moyo was without a club having rejected the offer of a training contract with French side Sochaux.
Ajax, Bordeaux and Manchester United were all said to be interested in the winger.
Newcastle United desperately want Shay Given back at St James’s Park on an emergency loan deal, despite Manchester City’s insistence that Given will remain at Eastlands at least until Janaury.
The news comes as current first-choice keeper Steve Harper faces a three-month lay-off with a shoulder injury that led to his being stretchered off during Newcastle’s game with Everton at the weekend. According to the Daily Mirror, the Magpies will ask for permission to snap up a keeper on an emergency loan and the paper reckons that keeper may well be Given.
However, Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has said that Given will have to stay at the club until January but will be allowed to go when the transfer window re-opens.
Speaking after City’s 2-0 win at Wigan yesterday, Mancini said: “I told him that he can stay but I respect his decision and if he wants to leave he can. He decided to stay here and until January he must stay here. I have a lot of respect for Shay and I told him the situation,” stated Mancini. “I understand his frustration but I need that Shay stays here and puts in 100%.”
Given lost his place to England keeper Joe Hart at the start of the season and has yet to appear in any of City’s eight games so far.

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton has laughed off reports that Tottenham want to make a January bid for striker Andy Carroll.
The 21-year-old has made a promising start to the season and has been linked with a big money move to White Hart Lane. However, Hughton scoffed at suggestions Carroll could leave the club.
“Amused is probably the right word,” he said. “I thought the window had closed.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle themselves are said to be keeping an eye on Swindon defender Sean Morrison. Boss Chris Hughton sees the 19-year-old centre back as a possible replacement for want-away defender Steven Taylor.
Morrison has played 40 times for the League One side after making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2008.
