Liverpool Keen On Mertesacker

Liverpool are interested in Germany international full-back Per Mertesacker, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The club’s director of football strategy Damien Commolli watched the Werder Bremen defender in action before Christmas and the paper says he has recommended that the club put in a bid.

Werder are believed to be ready to sell now they are out of the Champions League but are believed to want a fee of at least £10 million for the 26-year-old.

Speculation last summer strongly linked Arsenal with Mertesacker though Werder director Klaus Allofs denied that any enquiry was received.

There is speculation that should Liverpool sign the German it could lead to the departure from Anfield of Daniel Agger; however, boss Roy Hodgson said on Friday that the Dane remains part of his plans.

“If ever you hear Daniel Agger is being ‘offered’, it’s not by Liverpool Football Club – it’s by unscrupulous people who are second guessing and looking at players who have not been in the team in the last couple of weeks and suggesting they might be available” Hodgson said.

Huth Bid Set To Fail

Liverpool look set to fail in their attempt to sign Stoke defender Robert Huth. The 26-year-old centre-half was said last week to be the subject of some interest from the Anfield side who were ready to put in a £5 million bid, but the German defender said he is happy enough at the Britannia Stadium.

“I had some texts telling me about the story,” he said. “It doesn’t bother me because it’s great here at Stoke for me.’’

Liverpool Interested In Palace Striker

Liverpool are interested in signing Crystal Palace teenager Wilfried Zaha.

The 18-year-old Ivorian striker has scored once in 14 games this season but with Palace financially stricken and manager George Burley keen to raise funds to bring in new faces a £2 million bid from the Anfield side could see Zaha heading north.

Liverpool have watched him play on a number of occasions but could face competition for his signature with Fulham also said to be interested.

Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours,

Edin Dzeko

Liverpool Linked With Dzeko Move

Liverpool are the latest club to be linked with a move for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.

The surprise news comes as Manchester City renew their interest in the Bosnian international with whom they were linked during the close season.

Wolfsburg want a fee of £38 million for Dzeko although the release clause in his contract is set at 40 million euros (£34 million). Both Liverpool and City have offered players in part-exchange for Dzeko; Liverpool have offered Ryan Babel and Daniel Agger while City have offered Togo international striker Emmanuel Adebayor although he has turned down the prospect of a move to Germany.

Whether or not Wolfsburg will part with Dzeko remains to be seen as the Bosnian is their top scorer with 10 goals as the Bundesliga heads into its winter break. The side lies perilously close to the drop zone with Dzeko’s contribution arguably keeping them out of one of the relegation slots. As it is they lie just four points above the drop zone.

Even if Babel and Agger do go to Wolfsburg as part of the deal Liverpool’s new owners NESV are likely to have stump up a considerabe amount of cash before the deal can go through.

Liverpool ‘Set For Huth Bid’

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is looking to make a £5 million bid for Stoke defender Robert Huth, according to the Daily Mirror.

With Jamie Carragher out for up to three months and Daniel Agger’s season also hit by injury Hodgson is looking to beef up his defensive options and is set to make an opening offer to tempt Huth away from the Britannia Stadium.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis is likely to resist any bids for the player – certainly any bid less than the £6 million Huth cost last year.

Liverpool Offer Contract Extensions To Youngsters

Liverpool Offer Contract Extensions To Youngsters

Spearing Is Third Youngster To Offered New Deal

Liverpool expect to offer midfielder Jay Spearing a new extended contract as the club’s recently-appointed director of football strategy, Damien Commolli, continues his policy of tying down the club’s young talent.

Spearing has 18 months to run on his current deal and negotiations have started on a new three-and-a-half year contract.

Teenage forward Pacheco has already signed a two-year extension while Martin Kelly has signed a three-year extension to his current deal.

Spearing has found first-team opportunities limited at Anfield and has mainly been used in European games and Carling Cup ties. A loan spell last season at Championship side Leicester City saw him score one goal in nine appearances for the Foxes but the Reds rate him highly enough to want to keep him at the club as Commolli repeats part of the strategy he used at Spurs which, since his departure in 2008, has seen the likes of Gareth Bale come through the Spurs youth ranks.

Reds Will Listen To Jovanovic Offers

Milan Jovanovic could be on his way out of Liverpool in January – assuming anyone can afford his wages.

The Serb arrived from Belgian side Standard Liege at the start of the season after signing a pre-contract deal last year but he has failed to impress at Anfield. Earlier this season Jovanovic expressed his impatience with life on the sub’s bench, but in 15 appearances for the Reds he has scored just twice and has failed to find the net at all in his eight Premier League appearances.

Now, Liverpool are ready to let him go and German sides Cologne and Hamburg and Serie A outfit Genoa are believed to be interested. Former Anfield boss Rafa Benitez was rumoured to be ready to hijack Jovanovic’s move to Liverpool when he was appointed boss of Inter Milan but that now appears unlikely given that Benitez’s days at the San Siro seem to be numbered.

The main sticking point for any would-be purchaser is Jovanovic’s wages. The 29-year-old earns around £50,000 a week at Anfield – enough to potentially frighten off any takers in Germany – but Liverpool are ready to listen to any serious offers.

Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours, Sunday 19 December

Fernando Torres

Barcelona Plan Torres Bid

Barcelona are planning a summer bid for Fernando Torres, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The Catalan giants are planning a bid for both Torres and Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas that will cost them £85 million.

The paper bases its report on a huge sponsorship deal with the Qatar Foundation which has given Barcelona a huge cash injection of £25 million a year just months after the club had to negotiate an emergency loan to get them through the summer.

Torres is a former Atletico Madrid player who said during the summer that Barcelona are the only Spanish team he would move to. Real Madrid are said to be interested but the player wouldn’t countenance a move to the cross-town rivals of his boyhood club.

Barcelona made a £30 million bid for Fabregas during the summer which resulted in a protracted transfer wrangle that ended with the player staying at the Emirates after Arsenal dug in their heels.

However, the paper reports that both Fabregas and Torres are at the top of coach Pep Guardiola’s wish list for next season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are keen to take Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge on loan in January with a view to a £5 million transfer in the summer.

Sturridge has found first-team opportunities at Chelsea hard to come by but he could leave if, as expected, Carlo Ancelotti buys another striker in the January transfer window.

Barrios Set To Choose Real Madrid Over Liverpool

Various sources in Spain are suggesting that Borussia Dortmund striker Lucas Barrios is set to choose a move to Real Madrid ahead of a Premier League club.

As reported last month Liverpool are said to be interested in the Paraguayan striker whose eight goals have lifted his club to the top of the table as the German season gets set to enter its winter break. The Reds were reportedly ready to offer Ryan Babel or Milan Jovanovic plus a cash settlement for the 26-year-old Barrios, who hit 23 goals in 36 games for Dortmund last season after joining from Chilean side Colo Colo in 2009.

Manchester City and AC Milan are also said to have made enquiries.

However, reports from Spain today suggest that Real Madrid are ready to offer the German side a fee of between 15 million and 20 million euros to bring Barrios to the Bernabeu after mulling over bids for Werder Bremen’s Hugo Almeida and Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko.

Liverpool Given Hope Over Fanni

Liverpool have been given a glimmer of hope that Rennes defender Rod Fanni will not sign for Marseille after all.

The France international is believed to be a target for Roy Hodgson but began talks last week about a £3.5 million move to the French league leaders. But the move has become bogged down as the two sides try to come to an agreement.

Marseille boss Didier Deschamps claims the clubs are haggling over a fee for the 29-year-old who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Deschamps, when interviewed in France at the weekend, expressed optimism that a deal could be sorted out, saying: “I do not know if it will happen in the coming hours, but in the coming days? Hopefully.

“He wants to come. I think my bosses will do what is necessary for that to happen.”

However, Deschamps’ boss cast doubts on the transfer yesterday. Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier said Fanni had presented the club with “unreasonable demands”

“Today, we can not be optimistic,” Dassier tols radio station RMC.

“Rod Fanni’s demands are unreasonable and I am pessimistic. I do not see the point of having a meeting, unless the player deals with us in a reasonable manner.”

Dassier said a decision would be taken by Monday night and there are suggestions that he could now switch his attentions to Nantes’ Michaël Chrétien.

Liverpool Accept Johnson’s Departure

Liverpool have accepted that Glen Johnson will leave Anfield, according to the Daily Mail, and the club are beginning steps to recruit a replacement.

The 26-year-old full-back has been at odds with manager Roy Hodgson since his arrival this summer with Hodgson criticising Johnson’s commitment and Johnson describing the side’s tactics as ‘boring.’

A move abroad looks inevitable for the former Chelsea, Portsmouth and West Ham defender. An approach by Real Madrid during the summer led to Johnson taking Spanish lessons but Italian side Juventus are leading the race for Johnson’s signature and are rumoured to be ready to meet Liverpool’s asking price of £12 million. However, they are only ready to make their bid next summer and the Mail suggests that Liverpool may well ask for Juve’s 30-year-old striker Amauri to be included as part of a deal to be done in January. The Brazilian-born striker made his international debut for Italy against the Ivory Coast in August and was due to be offered to Fiorentina, but Juve may think again if it means they can land Johnson.

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is keen to recruit a new partner for Fernando Torres and feels Amauri may fit the bill. There is talk that Milan Jovanovic may be heading for the exit door in January having failed to make an impression since his arrival from Standard Liege during the summer.

Juventus are also said to be keen to take Daniel Agger but the Dane has warned that he won’t be forced out of Anfield.

Liverpool have been linked with Rennes’ France international full-back Rod Fanni as Johnson’s replacement and while Rennes are now resigned to losing the 29-year-old Marseilles are favourites to sign him in a £3.5 million deal. Liverpool are also said to be keen on Lazio’s Swiss international Stephan Lichtsteiner, though Liverpool will have to go head-to-head with Real Madrid who are also said to be interested.

Reds Target In Talks With Marseille

Liverpool may miss out on Rennes defender Rod Fanni.

We reported yesterday that Ligue One side Marseille were looking to challenge the Reds for the services of the 29-year-old defender whom they see as a replacement for Glen Johnson. However, Marseille have stolen a march on Liverpool by holding talks with Fanni and his agent.

The two parties seem far from an agreement on a deal in which Fanni would join Marseille for a fee of around £3.5 million.

“Nothing has been agreed,” the player’s agent said yesterday. “We are still far from an agreement.”

Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours, Thursday 9 December

Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours, Thursday 9 December

Lucas ‘Urges’ Ronaldinho Bid

Liverpool are being linked with a number of transfer targets today.

First of all some outlets are reporting that Liverpool midfielder Lucas is urging the Reds to put in a bid for AC Milan striker Ronaldinho. Lucas told the Brazilian website Globoesporte earlier this week that he would welcome his countryman at Anfield.

Ronaldinho is out of contract at the San Siro at the end of the season and has yet to agree a new deal at the club. It is believed his current deal brings in around 8 million euros per season and it was reported earlier this year that AC Milan were going to offer a lower amount of 6 million euros a year to keep him at the club. There were also reports in the Italian press during the summer of a 10 million euro a year offer over three years from Greek side Olympiakos.

Asked to speculate about a move to Merseyside for Ronaldinho, Lucas was coy in his answer whilst being careful to welcome the 30-year-old’s addition to the Anfield line-up.

“I’m not aware of anything regarding a possible signing of Ronaldinho, but of course I’d be very happy if it were to happen.

“We became friends during the time we shared at the Olympics and with the national team. It would be great to play with him at Liverpool.

“Everyone knows Ronaldinho’s quality and what he can do. Without doubt it would be a great boost for us.”

Unfortunately, the goals seem to have dried up for Ronaldinho. He has scored just once in 16 games for Milan this season – a goal against Auxerre in the Champions League – and the days of him scoring a goal every other game as he did during his five-year spell at Barcelona seem to be behind him.

Liverpool Linked With French Defender

A more realistic target is French defender Rod Fanni. The 29-year-old was the subject of close-season interest from both Sunderland and Atletico Madrid, while Marseille are still interested in the Rennes right-back.

Liverpool are hoping that director of football strategy Damien Comolli will use his French connections to land Fanni in a £3 million deal. There are reports that Rennes need the money and that a cut-price £3 million paid up front will see the France international move to Anfield.

That in turn would see the departure of Glen Johnson. The England international has not seen eye to eye with manager Roy Hodgson and last month slammed the team’s tactics as ‘boring’ after Hodgson publicly criticised his performances. Spurs are the favourite to land Johnson’s signature,.

Liverpool Hope To Launch £15m Bid for Young

Liverpool are also hoping to seal the £15 million signing of Aston Villa winger Ashley Young in January, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 25-year-old England international has been linked with a move to Spurs and recently pulled the plug on talks with Villa on a new deal said to be worth around £75,000 a week. Spurs still look favourites to sign Young but the Mirror says that Hodgson and Comolli are currently working on a deal to bring him to Anfield.

Liverpool ‘To Bid £10m’ For Whickam

Liverpool are taking an interest in Ipswich Town’s teenage striker, Connor Wickham.

The Daily Mail reports that the Reds are lining up a £10 million deal for the 17-year-old and snatch him from under the noses of Spurs and Arsenal who have been monitoring Whickam for much of the year.

Spurs are said by the Mail to have recently had Whickam watched and are said to be ready with an £8.5 million deal dependent on appearances. However, Whickam has managed only four appearances for the ‘Tractor Boys’ this season and has yet to find the net after managing six goals in 29 games last season.

The paper suggests that if Liverpool do buy Whickam it would fit in with Hodgson’s ‘Buy British’ policy though it also suggests that the teenager’s departure from Portman Road could mean the end for Ipswich boss Roy Keane.

Shawcross Linked With Anfield Move

Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross is being linked with a move to Liverpool by the Daily Mail.

The paper also reports that Daniel Agger has said he won’t be forced out of the club. The Dane – currently injured – has been linked with a move to Inter Milan where he would join up with his former Anfield boss Rafa Benitez. However, he is quoted in the paper as saying he will not be leaving Liverpool as he has four years left on his contract.

“I expect Roy Hodgson to have the guts to tell me face to face if he doesn’t want me,” the Mail quotes him as saying.

Liverpool Linked With £10m Cahill Move

With Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher out of action for up to three months Roy Hodgson is lining up a £10 million bid for Bolton central defender Gary Cahill, according to the Daily Star.

The 24-year-old has attracted rave reviews for his performances this season as Wanderers have surged into the top half of the Premier League table and made his England debut when he came on as a substitute in their game with Bulgaria in September.

Arsenal have also been linked with a January bid for Cahill, who has a release clause of £15 million in his contract following his England debut. Wanderers are likely to ask for £18 million as they try to reduce some of their £93 million debts.

However, The Sun is linking Liverpool with a move for French defender Adil Rami. The paper suggests that Rami – who plays for Ligue 1 side Lille – would cost £12 million, some £3 million less than Cahill’s release clause.

The 24-year-old signed for Lille from French fourth division side Frejus in 2007, and has made over 100 appearances for the club including an impressive performance against Liverpool in last season’s Europa League.

There are also reports today linking Liverpool with a £6 million bid for Colombian striker Teofilo Gutierrez. The 25-year-old played for Trabzonspor in their Europa League qualifying round games but has had disciplinary problems with the club and coach Senol Gunes said at the end of October that he no longer wanted Gutierrez at the club after he left Trabzon without permission.

Liverpool FC News: Carragher Out for Three Months

Liverpool FC News: Carragher Out for Three Months

Carragher Likely To Be Out For Three Months

Jamie Carragher is likely to be out for three months after dislocating his shoulder in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Spurs on Sunday.

Carragher was substituted four minutes from the end of the game and a scan on Monday has confirmed he will spend the next three months on the sidelines.

“I’ll be having surgery at the end of the week,” Carragher told the club’s official website.

“The average is about 12 weeks. I’d like to come back before that but I’ve got to make sure it’s right. It will probably be late February or early March when I’m looking to come back.”

The news comes as a blow to Liverpool and their manager Roy Hodgson who already has captain Steven Gerrard out for three to four weeks with a hamstring injury picked up in England’s game with France a fortnight ago.

Meanwhile, Carragher is left ruing his misfortune.

“I’ve been here before with a broken leg which put me out this length of time. It’s not easy but you’ve got to get on with it, and it makes you more determined to get back.

“I’m sure towards the end of the season when people are maybe feeling a little bit tired I’ll be raring to go.”

Sotirios Kyrgiakos came on for Carragher in the game with Spurs and is likely to deputise for him during his absence.

Hodgson Watches Elmander

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson and his assistant Sammy Lee were at Bolton Wanderers’ game with Blackpool on Saturday and the talk is that they were watching Bolton striker Johan Elmander.

The Swede is out of contract at the end of the season and is said to have been offered a new one-year deal on lower wages than the £50,000 a week he earns at present.

Elmander is on a purple patch having hit eight goals in the opening 15 league games after a bare two years since his £8.5 million transfer from Toulouse.

Hodgson has tried to sign Elmander before, when he was manager at Fulham and Elmander was at Toulouse, and is currently looking for cover for Fernando Torres. However, Elmander is looking for first-team football rather than a place on the bench which he might have to satisfy himself with at Anfield.

Bolton have their own transfer targets but are in a ‘sell-before-you-can-buy’ situation after it was revealed the club have debts of £93 million and may have to sell some of their star names to reduce the debt.

Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours, Saturday 27 November

Reina Warns Of Player Exodus

Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina has warned that the club could lose some of its best players if it fails to improve on its current ninth position.

The keeper has himself been linked with a move away from Anfield, something he has been at pains to deny in recent weeks, but he says it may otherwise be difficult to hang on to the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

“We have to finish this season in a better position than we are at the moment and make sure we build for the next years and try to be competitive,” he told ESPNsoccernet. “If not, it’s going to be difficult for them to keep these kind of players.”

Reina himself refused to commit his long-term future to the club shrugging “don’t know” when asked but he is adamant that a top four finish is still a possibility in one of the tightest Premier League races for years.

“Why not? But we have to be sure that we deliver better performances otherwise it’s going to be really, really, really difficult.” However, he warned that Liverpool’s squad wasn’t as deep as their rivals for a top four finish. “At the moment, it’s almost impossible to compete for nine months against Chelsea, for example, and that is what I want. The clubs all around England are building proper squads. We have to do the same and we have to be able to compete.”

Roma Hoping For Kuyt Exchange

Roma are hoping to tempt Liverpool into parting with Dirk Kuyt and are set offer a player-swap deal involving defender Philippe Mexes, according to the Daily Mail.

Kuyt has been linked with a departure from Anfield since Rafa Benitez was sacked as manager at the beginning of June but after Benitez was installed as manager of Inter Milan the Anfield side slapped a £20 million price tag on the Dutchman, effectively putting off potential purchasers.

Centre half Mexes is out of contract at the end of the season so a straight swap looks out of the question but the paper suggests that Liverpool could ask for Montenegro striker Mirko Vucinic instead. Vucinic was one of many players linked with a move to Manchester City during the summer but stated at the time that he was happy to remain at the Olympic Stadium.

Aquilani Agent Denies Liverpool Recall

Meanwhile, Alberto Aquilani’s agent has been quick to quash rumours that appeared on one website on Friday that suggested Liverpool were set to recall Aquilani in January.

“Aquilani is staying at Juventus,” Franco Zavaglia said on Friday.

“The Bianconeri have until June to sign the player. The figures have already been fixed.”

Aquilani has been in impressive form for Juve this season after a disappointing injury-hit season at Anfield.

Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours, Friday 26 November

Liverpool Linked With Lille Trio

Friday’s edition of The Independent quotes sources in France as saying that Liverpool are expected to put in a bid for Lille defender Adil Rami. The central defender played for France against England at Wembley last week and France Football suggests the 24-year-old centre-back is a target for Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson.

Liverpool are also said to be interested in Lille’s Ivorian wide-man Gervinho and the club’s Belgian striker Eden Hazard although other sources suggest that the French club will not be parting with either of those players.

Rami signed for Lille from fourth division side Frejus in 2007, and has made over 100 appearances for Lille including an impressive performance against Liverpool in last season’s Europa League game in Lille.

However, Hazard’s representative John Bico told the website sport.co.uk that his client will be going nowhere before next summer.

“I won’t talk about what could happen in the summer but what I would say is there is absolutely no chance he will leave in January as he is in such fantastic form and there is no reason to look elsewhere. He is enjoying his football at the moment.”

Other reports suggest that Gervinho is being lined up for a £12 million move to Arsenal.

Liverpool Set To Lose Out On Bacinovic

Meanwhile reports from Italy suggest that Liverpool are about to be pipped by Chelsea for the £12 million signature of Palermo’s 21-year-old midfielder Armin Bacinovic. The Slovenian only joined the Serie A side in August.

Toivonen Rules Out January Move

Liverpool target Ola Toivonen has ruled out a January move to the Premier League but the PSV Eindhoven striker could yet be on his way to England in the summer.

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson targeted Toivonen during the summer but was discouraged by PSV’s £13 million price tag for the Swedish striker.

Toivonen has hit nine goals in 14 league games for the Dutch side this season but with Ibrahim Afellay already lined up for a move from PSV to Barcelona in January Toivonen says it is highly unlikely that he will join him in heading for the exit.

“I am set to set stay at PSV,” Toivonen told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. “We’re losing Afellay and I have no plans to leave.

“I know that there are clubs looking at every game so rumours are something that I have to live with.”

However, when pressed about his plans beyond the end of the season Toivonen was non-committal:

“It would be fun to get a gold with PSV. We have a perfect harmony in the club.”
