Paul Ince is the new manager of League One side Notts County. The 43-year-old replaces Craig Short who was sacked at the weekend after just five months in charge.

The former MK Dons boss has signed a three-and-a-half year deal and becomes the Magpies’ fifth manager in little more than a year.

County chairman Ray Trew said that Ince’s experience as a player and as a lower league manager stood him in good stead when he applied for the job.

“There were a number of high calibre applications for the position and it was encouraging to see just how attractive a proposition managing Notts County remains to some very prestigious names in the world of football management.

“However, when we met Paul it quickly became clear that he was the ideal candidate, he’d done his homework, had some big ideas and was ready to get stuck in straightaway.”

Ince previously had two spells at MK Dons, the latter ending when he resigned at the end of last season. He began his managerial career at Macclesfield and also managed at Blackburn Rovers in between his spells at Milton Keynes.

County lie in 16th place in League One.

Steve Tilson and Paul Brush Take Over At Lincoln

Lincoln have appointed former Southend boss Steve Tilson as manager on a two-and-a-half year contract. Tilson’s former assistant at Southend, Paul Brush, has also joined the League Two side.

Tilson’s seven-year spell as Southend manager came to an end this summer when he was placed on “gardening leave” while Lincoln have been looking for a manager since Chris Sutton resigned for personal reasons at the end of last month.

Tilson joins Lincoln with The Imps languishing in 20th place in League Two with 11 points from their opening 11 games. He had a ten-year playing career with Southend before dropping into non-league football with Canvey Island. He moved into the backroom at Southend before being appointed caretaker-manager at Roots Hall after Steve Wignall left the club in November 2003. After reaching the Football League Trophy Final in 204 he was appointed manager on a permanent basis leading the club to two successive promotions into the Championship.

Lincoln caretaker manager Scott Lindsey told the BBC: “I’ve known him for a long time and played with him at Canvey Island.

“The Southend team that he managed always got the ball down and played, which is how he was as a player.

“He’s got a brilliant track record and he’s still very young and he will be good for the club.”

Tilson and Brush officially take over on Monday while Lindsey will take charge of the team for the last time against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday before reverting back to his former role as first-team coach.

Sturrock and Widdrington To Take Over At Southend

Southend United have appointed former Plymouth and Southampton boss Paul Sturrock as their new manager.

Tommy Widdrington will also join the Shrimpers as Sturrock’s assistant. Both men have signed three-year deals that will keep them at Roots Hall until 2013.

Sturrock and Widdrington replace Steve Tilson who was placed on gardening leave yesterday after six years as manager of the club.

Sturrock managed St Johnstone and Dundee United in Scotland before taking charge of Plymouth Argyle in 2000. He steered the Pilgrims to the Third Division title the following season with a club record 102 points. The following season he took Plymouth to the top of the Second Division before leaving with 12 games left to take charge of Premier League side Southampton. His stay at St Mary’s was not successful and he was sacked after six months. Sturrock then moved onto Swindon Town where during his first season he achieved promotion from League Two.

He returned to Plymouth Argyle in 2007/08 and proceeded to take them to their highest league finish in 20-years before beating the drop the following season. Sturrock left Argyle in April this year.

Meanwhile Southend are facing a winding-up order at the High Court on 8 July over unpaid tax debts of around £200,000.

Southend Part Company With Tilson

Steve Tilson Put On ‘Gardening Leave’

Southend United have parted company with manager Steve Tilson. A statement on the club’s website said that Tilson had been placed on ‘gardening leave’ and had been relieved of his duties. The club says it will honour the final year of Tilson’s contract.

Tilson had been Southend manager for seven years during which time he took the club from League Two up to the Championship and in November 2006 the club achieved a notable victory over Manchester United in the League Cup. However, they were relegated back to League One in 2007 after just one season in the Championship and although they reached the League One play-offs the following season, they were hammered over two legs by Doncaster Rovers. An eight place finish in 2009 was followed by a desperate struggle last season which saw them finish 23rd and relegated to League Two.

Club chairman Ron Martin said it had been one of the toughest decisions of his football career. “Steve and I have had a very good relationship and one of the longest in the Football League,” he said.

“Whilst a difficult decision, it was nevertheless one that was unanimous with the board who wish to sincerely thank Steve for his contribution through the years.”

The club says it will hold a news conference on Monday.
