Barcelona Announced £125m Shirt Sponsorship Deal With Qatar Foundation
Five Year Deal Is Worth £25m A Year to Barcelona
Barcelona have announced a record-breaking £125 million a year shirt sponsorship deal with the Qatar Foundation.
The deal will run for five years giving the Catalan club £25 million a year – more than the £23 million Bayern Munich earn as well as the £20 million or so earned by Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Under the terms of the deal the club will earn an additional £12.5 million for the concept of commercial rights, with a trophy bonus of up to £4 million.
Barca have carried the Unicef logo for the past five years and the Qatar Foundation’s logo will be carried in addition to the Unicef motif. Over the coming months a logo will be designed and the club’s shirt manufacturers Nike will include the design on the club’s shirt for next season.
The Qatar Foundation is a Middle East-based non-profit making educational charity. It runs the 2500-acre Education City on the western fringes on the Gulf state’s capital, Doha, and is chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, the wife of the Emir of Qatar, who was part of his country’s successful 2022 World Cup bid last week.
The Barçelona first team will play a friendly match, which will not necessarily take place in Qatar while the Qatar Foundation will also help in projects alongside Unicef and the club’s own charity, the Fundació Barça.
The sponsorship move comes after the Spanish champions made a loss of over £64 million for the 2009/10 season and was revealed to be carrying debts of over £369.5 million.
Sources at the club claim it is “a remarkable milestone because it represents a record level of revenue for a football club and has more value still in the current economic climate”.

Barcelona 5-0 Real Madrid. Mourinho: “A Defeat, Not A Humiliation”
Real Outclassed In Barca Masterclass
Jose Mourinho has criticised his team’s defending as “ridiculous” after Real Madrid were thrashed 5-0 by Barcelona at the Nou Camp last night.
The Catalan side leapfrogged their rivals to go top of La Liga as Real were outclassed in a masterful performance by the Spanish champions.
Goals from Xavi and Pedro put Barca 2-0 up at half-time but Barca had doubled their lead by the hour mark as Lionel Messi twice split the Real Madrid with passes for David Villa to finish off. A fifth goal from Jeffran only added to Real’s humiliation and Sergio Ramos was sent off to add their night’s misery.
“It is a defeat, not a humiliation,” said Mourinho after the match.” It is the biggest defeat of my career but it is very easy to digest because it is a defeat in a game that you had no chance of winning.”
He said that the game had seen one team playing to its full potential against one playing very badly but added that “the championship will be decided at the end. We will still be there at the end.”
He went on: “You have to have character. When you win titles you are happy, but when you lose by five must leave with the will to train, play and win.”
For Mourinho, returning to the ground where he once worked as a translator, the first half was crucial. “We gave away two ridiculous goals. At 2-0 against a team like Barcelona you have two choices: stick with the 2-0 or attack and risk conceding more.”
However, Barca coach Pep Guardiola was understandably delighted with his side’s performance:
“Being able to compete in this way against a team that has historically won the most Championships and which was unbeaten this season in the league and in Europe, fills me with joy.”
And in a game as a battle between the two best players in the world – Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – Guardiola was in no doubt as to who came out on top. “Messi is the best in the world without a doubt.”

Raul Set For Schalke

Raul Set To Sign £50k a Week Contract
Real Madrid legend Raul looks set to sign a 6 million euro contract with Bundesliga side Schalke 04.
Reports from Germany and Spain suggest that a deal is imminent and that Raul’s 18-year spell at the Bernabeu was coming to an end.
Spurs, Newcastle and Blackburn have all been linked with Raul, but Schalke coach Felix Magath is convinced that striker is on his way to his club.
“Raul has shown in every moment his interest in signing for our team and we believe he will arrive, be it in days or weeks,” Magath told Spanish newspaper Marca, while the German newspaper SportBild suggested that a two year deal has already been agreed which would pay Raul around 6 million euros – the equivalent of around £50,000 a week.

Jermaine Pennant “Not For Sale” – Zaragoza

Follow us on Twitter
Real Zaragoza president Agapito Iglesias says Jermaine Pennant is not for sale. There had been rumours that Pennant had been offered to three Premier League clubs – Wigan, Wolves and West Ham – although Wolves boss Mick McCarthy claimed that Pennant had not been offered to his club.
Pennant had a poor first season in Zaragoza, failing to find the net in 25 league appearances and was the subject of internal disciplinary action after turning up late for training three times in the space of two weeks. However, Iglesias claims the player has not been offered to anybody and that there is a buyout clause in his contract of some £21 million.
Iglesias told Sky Sports: “Pennant is one of our big players and is a big talent, we have not offered him to any teams.
“He has a buy-out clause of €25m and in that case we would have no choice but we want to keep him, we all believe he will be even better next season.”

”Inter To Sell Maicon To Real Madrid” – Report

Follow us on Twitter
Benitez Told Maicon Will Be Sold
A report from Spain suggests that new Inter Milan boss Rafa Benitez has been told that his Brazilian defender Maicon is likely to be sold to Real Madrid.
The Spanish newspaper, AS, reports today that if Inter’s price of 35 million euros is met, then Maicon will be on his way, something bound to upset Benitez as he regarded Maicon as a mainstay of the team. However, Real are apparently not willing to pay any more than the 25 million euros they have already offered but are willing to offer a pay packet the equivalent of £80,000 a week – a considerable increase on the money Maicon earns at Inter.
