The 49-year-old had been the boss at St Mary’s for a little over 12 months and the move comes after the Saints won 4-0 at Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
First-team coach Wally Downes and goalkeeping coach Stuart Murdoch have also left the club while coach Dean Wilkins has taken over as caretaker manager assisted by under-21 coach Martin Hunter.
A statement on the club’s website said:
“Following a review of the current status in and around the First Team, the Club has decided that, to achieve its well known targets, it is essential to make changes to the First Team management and coaching.
“These targets for sustained and significant progress embrace both the First Team and the Football Development & Support Centre as integrated, co-operative units.”
The statement added:
“We recognise that frequent changes to the football management are unlikely to assist in the winning of trophies and promotions.
“However, we are taking these steps to achieve our aims, which we share with all supporters, to get promoted this season, and secure long term stability and progress for our football operations.”
Southampton currently lie 14th in League One after one win, one draw and a defeat in their opening three games, six points behind leaders Sheffield Wednesday but with a game in hand.
The club’s owner Markus Liebherr died suddenly last month but ownership of the club is set to remain solely in the hands of the Liebherr family.
Crystal Palace have come out of administration and have celebrated by signing Dutch legend Edgar Davids.
The 37-year-old Davids has signed on a pay-as-you-play basis though he has between without a club since leaving Ajax in 2008.
Davids trained with his new team-mates on Friday afternoon and will be at Selhurst Park for tomorrow’s match with Ipswich Town.
“It is an exciting time for the football club, and it is an exciting time for me. I just want to enjoy football and show the best I can do,” Davids told the Palace website.
Boss George Burley admitted he had spoken to Davids earlier this week:
“We had a meeting with him. The boy felt enthusiasm and he has been training with Ajax but now its good to see us agree terms with him.”
Davids left Spurs in 2007 to return to Ajax, with whom he began his career in 1991. During a 17-year career he won six league titles in Holland and Italy, four national cups, a Champions League medal and a UEFA Cup-winners medal.
Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy is set to sign a six-month loan deal with Cardiff City, according to a report on the website Wales Online.
The website says that the paperwork is to be completed in time for Bellamy to sign for his new club tomorrow.
Bellamy has been linked with a number of clubs as it has become apparent that he will not be in Manchester City’s 25-man Premier League squad to be submitted by 1 September. Spurs, Fulham and Celtic were amongst a number of clubs interested in taking Bellamy on a loan signing, however Roberto Mancini wasn’t keen on letting his striker go to a Premier League rival while Celtic’s wage structure with its £30,000-a-week ceiling could not accommodate Bellamy’s £80,000 a week wage at Eastlands.
Bellamy had been linked with a move to Cardiff during the close season, however the move fell apart after the club had a transfer embargo slapped on it by the Football League. That embargo has since been lifted.
