Fifa Suspends Duo After World Cup Vote Claims

Adamu and Temarii Suspended from 2018 and 2022 Votes
Fifa have suspended two members of its executive committee after claims they asked for money in exchange for World Cup votes.
Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii have been banned from voting in the hosting ballots for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups with Adamu banned from football activity for three years and fined 10,000 Swiss francs and Temarii was banned for one year and fined 5,000 Swiss francs.
Four former executive committee members were also fined 10,000 Swiss francs and suspended from football. Ismael Bhamjee of Botswana has been given a four-year ban, Amadou Diakite of Mali and Ahongalu Fusimalohi of Tonga three-year bans and Tunisia’s Slim Aloulou a two-year suspension.
The suspension of Adamu and Temarii means the hosting ballot for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup competitions will proceed with 22 members instead of 22. However, there are fears that their suspension could in the long run adversely affect the England bid for the 2018 tournament as both were expected to cast their votes in favour of the England bid.
Adamu and Temarii were secretly filmed by reporters from the Sunday Times allegedly asking for payments for votes. Nigerian Adamu allegedly said he wanted £500,000 to build four artificial football pitches in his country in contravention of Fifa rules while Temarii is alleged to have asked for payments to put towards a sports academy in his home country of Tahiti.
The reporters had posed as representatives of American companies that wanted to bring the tournament to the USA although there was no suggestion in the paper’s reporting of any wrong-doing by the USA’s bid to host the 2022 tournament.
“I am profoundly disappointed with the ethics committee’s findings and had honestly believed I would be exonerated of any charges by now,” Adamu said after the hearing’s findings were announced.
“I am innocent of all the charges levelled against me by the ethics committee and I completely refute the decision they have made.
“As yet I have not been advised of the grounds of the ethics committee’s decision but regardless, I will be lodging a full appeal against it with immediate effect.”

Hart Sent Back To City For Treatment
Joe Hart will miss tonight’s England match with France at Wembley after pulling out of the squad with a back injury.
England are without first-choice keeper Joe Hart for Wednesday’s friendly with France after the Manchester City player pulled out with a back injury.
The 23-year-old suffered a back spasm during training on Tuesday morning and has been sent back to Manchester City for treatment.
Ben Foster of Birmingham City is likely to start the match while Scott Loach of Watford has been added to the squad.
Hart has been an ever-present in the England goal since the World Cup.

Concerns Raised Over All Four Bidders
England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup has received a ‘low risk’ grading from Fifa in its executive summary report ahead of the crucial vote next month that will award the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
However, the report, which will be published on Wednesday, has highlighted four contractual areas of concern. These are thought to be related to the booking of hotel rooms, the booking of training sites at both venues and training camps and the fact that TV rights are protected. Fifa is thought to be concerned that it could be exposed by the England bid’s failure to contract hotels and training camps while the protection of TV rights – the World Cup Finals can only be shown on free-to-air TV – means Fifa could potentially lose out on higher rights payments from pay-tv companies.
It is thought that England’s main rivals, the Spain/Portugal joint bid and the Russian bid, are also classed as ‘low risk’ while the Holland/Belgium joint bid is classed as ‘medium risk.’
Fifa’s points regarding the England bid are thought to be technicalities. The government is apparently set to step in to review the so-called ‘listed events’ in 2013 while it is thought that issues regarding training camps and hotel rooms can be smoothed over.
The summary also raises question marks over England’s main challengers, making it difficult to ascertain which of the four bids have the upper hand.
Spain/Portugal has the same number of ‘low risk’ gradings as England but Fifa raises concerns over the two countries’ decision to make a joint bid. It is also criticised over its city transport infrastructure, a lack of clarity over technology and venue-specific hotels and training sites.
The Russian bid receives more ‘medium risk’ gradings than England or Spain/Portugal with the size of the country, its remoteness from other countries, and its limited high-speed rail network causes for concern.
Like Spain/Portugal the Holland/Belgium bid is criticised over its decision to run as a joint bid but hotel rooms, training sites and team hotels, and the lack of government guarantees are major concerns.
The executive summary is to be published on Wednesday but full reports will only be available to Fifa committee members.
The vote to award both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups takes place on 2 December.

Newcastle Urge Caution Over Carroll
Carroll Set For England Debut
Newcastle striker Andy Carroll and Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson will both start for England against France tomorrow night.
Manager Fabio Capello made the announcement earlier today and said that Kieran Gibbs will also start in the match at Wembely. However, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has gone back to the Emirates having been ruled out through injury while Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart is being seen by the England team doctor.
Speaking of the three youngsters – Carroll, Henderson and Gibbs – Capello urged the Wembley crowd not to get on their back.
“The three players, we have to support them if the performances are not okay,” he said.
“It’s really important. Also, the senior players like Rio Ferdinand, Gareth Barry and Steven Gerrard have to help these players.”
Capello said he wasn’t concerned about recent allegations surrounding Carroll’s private life but admitted that the 21-year-old needs to improve things off the pitch.
“You have to help him because he made a mistake, but he is really young,” the England manager said.
“Everyone makes mistakes during their life.
“He’s a good player and I think he will understand, to stay with the senior [squad] will be really important for him because all the people, the newspapers, journalists will be focused on his life. He’ll improve.”
Capello also revealed that Everton centre-back Phil Jagielka was suffering from ‘flu but that he still expected him to play some part in the game while expecting no problem for Hart despite the City keeper having to see the England doctor,
John Terry, Ashley Cole, Glen Johnson and Wayne Rooney are all missing from the team through injury.

Trio Pull Out As Carroll Awaits Scan Results
Chelsea defenders John Terry and Ashley Cole and Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor have all pulled out of the England squad to face France on Wednesday.
Bolton’s Gary Cahill, Aston Villa’s Stephen Warnock and West Ham’s Carlton Cole have been called up as replacements.
Terry missed Chelsea’s 3-0 home defeat by Sunderland yesterday with injuries to his lower back and his hamstring while Cole picked up a knock in the same game. Agbonlahor picked up an injury during Villa’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Saturday.

Andy Carroll (left) picked up a groin strain in the final minutes of Newcastle’s goalless draw with Fulham at the weekend but the Toon striker hopes this won’t prevent him from making his England debut on Wednesday.
“I’ll be devastated if I have to pull out. It’s been my dream to play for England,” he said yesterday.
Carroll was having a scan at the England training camp last night to discover the extent of the injury.

Bothroyd Is Surprise Addition To England Squad
Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd is a surprise addition to the England squad for their friendly with France at Wembley on Wednesday.
Bothroyd is one of four new faces in the squad along with Newcastle striker Andy Carroll, Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson and Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
The four come in in place of Kevin Davies of Bolton while Joe Cole and Glen Johnson of Liverpool are also overlooked.
Manchester City full-back Micah Richards features for the first time under Fabio Capello, while Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs of Arsenal are also included. However the inclusion of Bothroyd is the most surprising. The former Coventry, Charlton and Wolves striker has hit 15 goals for the Bluebirds – including two in a win at Scunthorpe on Saturday – as the Welsh side currently sit at the top of the Championship and is line to become the first Cardiff City player ever to be picked for England.
The last Championship player to be capped by England was David Nugent who appeared in the 3-0 victory of Andorra in March 2007 while a Preston North End player.
The inclusion of Carroll and Henderson was widely expected and speaking before the squad was announced this evening Newcastle boss Chris Hughton said it would be a proud moment for Newcastle if Carroll was selected.
“For a young man to have the opportunity to represent his country, particularly with the amount of quality strikers there are around, then it would be a very proud day for him and the club,” said Hughton.

Terry Out With Back Injury
Chelsea’s John Terry has withdrawn from the England squad to face Montenegro at Wembley tomorrow night. The Chelsea skipper is suffering from a back injury.
A statement from the FA said: “Terry was assessed by England medical staff on Sunday and will not be fit to play any part in Tuesday’s game.” Terry also missed the games with Bulgaria and Switzerland while suffering from a hamstring injury.
Aaron Lennon and Phil Jagielka withdrew from the squad over the weekend and Gary Cahill of Bolton and Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing have been drafted into the squad, however, there will be no further additions.Terry suffered from a similar back problem in 2006 and required surgery to cure it.
Rio Ferdinand will probably start in central defence tomorrow with either Joleon Lescott or Cahill alongside him.

Carson – “I Won’t Sulk”
West Bromwich Albion keeper Scott Carson says he was devastated to be left out of Fabio Capello’s England squad for the match with Montenegro next week but says the only way he can force his way back into the reckoning is with his performances on the pitch.
Carson was called up for the games with Switzerland and Bulgaria but had to withdraw from the squad for personal reasons. However, he has now been left out of the squad for the Montenegro game with Joe Hart, Robert Green and Ben Foster getting the nod.
“Getting the recall for the last qualifiers was a big boost,” Carson told The Sun.
“I was delighted to be back but I needed to leave after a couple of days. The club then had a fax through to say I was in the provisional squad and I thought I’d be okay and be in the squad because I was in the last one. I was really devastated to find myself out this time.
“Having got back in for the last squad, I thought I’d carried my form on in the last few games. Being forced to pull out last time was for personal reasons and things seem to have gone against me.”
However, Carson won’t let his omission get him down.
“I won’t sulk,” he said. “I have to keep performances up and get everyone talking about me again in a good way.
“How I react to this is important. I will let my performances get me back in.”

Kevin Davies Wins England Call-Up

Davies In England Squad
Bolton striker Kevin Davies has won a surprise call-up for the England squad’s forthcoming Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro.
The 33-year-old – who has previously been linked with an England call that has never come – has impressed in Bolton’s start to the season and could be in line for his first-ever England cap.
West Ham keeper Robert Green returns to the fold after his disastrous World Cup campaign while there are also places for Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock and Arsenal teenager Jack Wilshere.
However, it is Davies’ call-up that will raise eyebrowns. Thirty-three years old and without an England cap, the Bolton striker has often been tipped for England honours, though most usually by his club managers at Bolton.
“It’s a really proud moment for me and my family,” Davies said on hearing the news. “I’ve just got to go along and enjoy the experience of being involved with the international team and if I get the chance to play then I will do my best to impress.
“I’m sure there will be a few nerves over the next couple of days and it hasn’t really sunk in yet, but I’m looking forward to this opportunity and I’m going to give it my best shot.”
Wayne Rooney and Darren Bent are also in the squad, named today by England boss Fabio Capello.
The full squad is:
Ben Foster (Birmingham City), Robert Green (West Ham United), Joe Hart (Manchester City)
Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa)
Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Joe Cole (Liverpool), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham Hotspur), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Ashley Young (Aston Villa)
Darren Bent (Sunderland), Peter Crouch (Tottenham Hotspur), Kevin Davies (Bolton Wanderers), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

Switzerland Team News
Switzerland are likely to stick to their usual 4-4-1-1 formation in their opening Euro 2012 qualifier.
All-time record goalscorer Alexander Frei will lead the team and will partner alongside Eren Derdiyok up front.
English-born full-back and Spurs fan Scott Sutter is likely to be amongst the substitutes with Stephan Lichtsteiner getting the nod in a notoriously tight Swiss defence.
Former Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes lacks match practice for his new club, Serie A side Chievo Verona, and is likely to start on the bench.
Goalkeeper Diego Benaglio says he is mentally prepared despite the imminent birth of his child. The keeper says he will have to leave the squad if the baby arrives early. His wife is due to give birth on Wednesday.

Capello Doubts Rooney’s State Of Mind
Fabio Capello will decide whether Wayne Rooney will play against Switzerland tomorrow night after a series of allegations about Rooney’s private life over the weekend led the England boss to doubt the striker’s state of mind.
The allegations appeared in two Sunday newspapers and although Rooney played a full part in training yesterday and has flown out with the rest of the England squad, Capello will make a decision tomorrow over whether or not to play him.
Capello spoke to Rooney privately about the matter yesterday and while he is expected to follow his instinct and select the Manchester United striker he is thought to be concerned about his state of mind following the allegations. Capello is thought that Rooney could easily become a target for provocation from the Swiss or simply crack under the pressure.
Neither Rooney nor his advisors have made any public comment on the allegations.
England are taking a squad of 22 with them to Switzerland for tomorrow night’s game in Basle. Jermain Defoe is expected to recovery from an ankle injury sustained in scoring his hat-trick goal against Bulgaria on Friday, but Michael Dawson faces a six- to eight-week lay-off after being carried off during the Bulgaria game. A replacement for Dawson has not been called up and Capello must decide whether to continue with the inexperienced centre-back pairing of Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill or to draft in West Ham’s Matthew Upson to play alongside Jagielka.
Switzerland have called up Scott Sutter for the game with England. The 24-year-old Young Boys full-back made his international debut for Switzerland against Australia on Friday.
Sutter was born in London to an English mother and a Swiss father and moved to Switzerland when he was 16. A career in football followed, first with Grasshoppers of Zurich and now with Young Boys and Sutter admits he will have mixed feelings if he plays against England.
“I supported England during the World Cup. I watched Switzerland beat Spain on TV but it was England who I was really cheering on,” he says.
The defender played in both Young Boys’ Champions League play-off games against Spurs – the team he supported as a child – earlier this month and will battle against Stephan Lichtsteiner for a place in Switzerland’s starting line-up.

England Team News v Bulgaria
Scott Carson is the latest player to pull out of the England squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers with Bulgaria at Wembley on Friday and in Switzerland on Tuesday. The West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper has been released from the squad to attend to a family bereavement. Watford and England Under-21 keeper Scott Loach has been called up in place of Carson, though this only demonstrates the lack of goalkeeping options England has.
Phil Jagielka trained with the squad on the Wembley surface on Thursday, the first time since he picked up an ankle injury in Everton’s game with Aston Villa on Sunday, and manager Fabio Capello suggested that the defender could start.
“He is fit, he trained well, there is a little bit of pain but I think for tomorrow he will be 100%.”
Michael Dawson, Joleon Lescott and Gary Cahill are all on stand-by in case Jagielka fails to make the starting eleven.
Capello also suggested that he was close to knowing his starting eleven.
“The keeper, Hart, Rooney, Steve [Gerrard], Barry, [Ashley] Cole, Johnson, Jagielka, more or less. I know 10 or 11, with a little doubt about one,” Capello said on Thursday.
“The training was really good, the players are okay and some problems we had in the last two days are getting better.”
Chelsea’s John Terry and Frank Lampard have been ruled out because of injuries, Terry with a hamstring problem and Lampard missing the match to have a hernia operation.
Meanwhile Capello has suggested that this isn’t the worst crisis of his management career.
“I hope pressure brings out the best in me. Up to now it usually has,” he said.
“It’s not the worst situation I’ve been in. It’s been the same two or three times, in Madrid, Milan, and now.”
Bulgaria Team news v England
Bulgaria manager Stanimir Stoilov says his players will try to “close” the English as efficiently as possible and will seize every opportunity to score. However, Bolton Wanderers winger Martin Petrov suggests that there isn’t a team spirit within the England camp.
“Everyone knows that England have names and very good players. If you take every player from the team, they are very good players.
“But I don’t think they have a team. I don’t know why. In the middle and up-front, they have big names, they have a big manager too, but they just don’t do it.”
Dimitar Berbatov has retired from international football so Ivelin Popov will most likely start as he tries to show Blackburn Rovers fans what they will be missing after work permit issues caused the failure of his transfer to the Premier League club.

League Two Side To Pick Up Bonus If Hart Starts Against Bulgaria
League Two side Shrewsbury Town will pick up a £500,000 bonus if Joe Hart starts for England against Bulgaria at Wembley tomorrow night.
The Shrews will pick up the bonus as part of the transfer deal that took goalkeeper Hart to Manchester City in May 2006.
“That will be huge for the club,” Hart said, “last time when I played in the friendly [against Hungary], they thought they were getting it but it has to be a competitive game.
“It is huge money for a team like that and I am pleased for them although there is only one player left from my time there. Everyone else has gone.”

Back Injury Forces Crouch Out Of England Squad
Spurs striker Peter Crouch has pulled out of the England squad for their Euro 2012 qualifiers with Bulgaria and Switzerland with a back injury. He will not be replaced in the squad.
England boss Fabio Capello is already facing a goalkeeping crisis after keepers Ben Foster and Scott Carson missed training through injury on Tuesday as did Everton centre-half Phil Jagielka. All three are expected to be fit for England’s first game, against Bulgaria on Friday night at Wembley.
