Bothroyd To Snub Italian Interest To Stay At Cardiff
Bothroyd To Stay At Cardiff
Jay Bothroyd will turn down the opportunity of a big-money move to Serie A to stay with Cardiff, according to the Daily Mirror.
The England international striker, who is believed to have been the subject of enquiries from AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus, is a free agent at the end of the season. Under Fifa rules Bothroyd can enter pre-contract negotiations with foreign clubs from January but the paper reports that he wants to concentrate on helping Cardiff into the Premier League.
The Bluebirds – beaten finalists in last season’s play-off final – currently lie in second place after rivals QPR slipped up with a 3-1 home defeat to Watford last night and third-placed Swansea could only draw with Millwall.
Bothroyd is nursing a hamstring injury at present and won’t be available for Cardiff’s game at Middlesbrough this afternoon but the 28-year-old says he hopes to be back next weekend.
“I’m trying not to think about speculation and am focusing on doing my best for Cardiff,” he said.
Bothroyd had a spell in Italy with Perugia between 2003 and 2005 but failed to settle and only made 23 appearances in his first season with the club, scoring five goals. He joined Blackburn on loan for his second season and on his return to Italy was transferred to Charlton.

Watford In Takeover Talks
Talks Could Lead To Takeover For Whole Of Club
Championship side Watford say they are in takeover talks with an un-named buyer.
It is believed that the club’s largest shareholder Fordwat – owned by Conservative Party peer Lord Ashcroft – is in talks to sell its 37% stake in the club although it is believed that any deal would involve a bid for the whole of the club.
Valley Grown Salads – owned by former Watford chairman Jimmy Russo – has a 29.98% stake in the club with another former chairman Graham Simpson owning 16.79%.
The club’s parent company, Watford Leisure, is quoted on the stock market and shares rose 35% to 9.5p valuing the club at £4 million.
In December of last year Watford almost went into administration before Ashcroft paid £4.88 million to settle a debt with Russo.

Wheater and O’Neil Offered To Premier League Clubs
David Wheater and Gary O’Neil are being offered to Premier League clubs ahead of the January transfer window, according to a report in today’s Daily Mirror.
The paper says that the duo are being offered by “third parties” as Boro prepare to cash in on two of their star assets. Blackburn are said to be interested in O’Neil while Stoke City are keen on Wheater.
O’Neil, 27, was signed by Middlesbrough from Portsmouth in 2007 for a fee of around £5 million while the 24-year-old Wheater came up through the youth ranks at the Riverside.

Mandaric In Sheffield Wednesday Takeover Link

Leicester Chairman Takes Interest In Owls
Leicester City chairman Milan Mandaric has emerged as a surprise contender to take over League One side Sheffield Wednesday. He is believed to have already taken an interest in the financially-stricken club.
Mr Mandaric, who has in the past owned Portsmouth as well as clubs in France, Belgium and the USA, sold his interest to Leicester to a Thai consortium in August. He remains as chairman of the Championship side but under current rules he would have to stand down if he took control of Wednesday.
Mr Mandaric was recently quoted as saying that he would like to remain in football when Leicester’s new owners decided to end his spell as chairman.
Wednesday need to pay a PAYE bill of £600,000 by next Wednesday 17 November and are also back in court in December over £300,000 of unpaid VAT. The club had faced a winding-up order in July over £550,000 of unpaid tax but that was settled after an agreement with the club’s bank in September. Failure to settle these debts could lead to administration and a ten-point penalty.
Wednesday have been in talks with potential investors. A US firm, Club 9 Sports, and Certified Oil Rentals have both been in talks about buying the club but both have withdrawn their interest.
In addition to unpaid taxes the club are said to owe £23 million to the Co-operative Bank.

Hull City Taken Over By Local Businessmen

Allam Brothers Take Over Tigers
East Yorkshire businessmen Assem Allam and his brother Ehab Allam have bought a controlling interest in Championship side Hull City from owner Russell Bartlett. The deal was reached at seven o’clock last night and follows several weeks of negotiation.
The Allams own a generator manufacturer, Allam Marine, in the area and Assem Allam is said to be worth £150 million. The businessmen will take a majority shareholding in both the club and also the KC Stadium company that manages the club’s stadium.
“We see our role as bringing financial stability to the club,” the 70-year-old Assem Allam said. “Our strengths are in business expertise and financial management. We will leave the football decisions to those who know best.”
The Allems will take over the club’s £35 million debts and have set aside funds to buy new players in the January transfer window.
Bartlett will retain a stake in the club and will remain in a non-executive position on the board while Adam Pearson will continue as head of football operations.
Mr Allam told the Hull Daily Mail:
“I have been here for 42 years and I have built up my business while I have been in this area and it is time to pay back to this area,” he said.
“Hull City is very important to this area. I like football and I watch football and I follow things about football.
“I am a Hull City supporter so I would not go to make an offer for say Leeds United or Sheffield Wednesday. No, I would not go as far as that.”

Tony Mowbray Appointed Middlesbrough Manager

Follow us on Twitter
Tony Mowbray is the new manager of Middlesbrough.
The former Celtic, Hibs and West Brom boss was appointed boss of the struggling Championship outfit on Tuesday, just over a week after former boss Gordon Strachan resigned following a poor start to the season.
Mowbray had a ten-year spell at Boro making 424 appearances for the club before a £1 million move to Celtic in 1991. After spells at Celtic and Ipswich Town, he moved into coaching at Portman Road before being appointed manager of Hibernian in 2004. He won the Manager of the Year award from the Scottish Football Writers Association in his first season in charge at the Edinburgh club and took West Brom into the Premier League in 2008 after being appointed boss at The Hawthorns in 2006. After relegation back to the Championship he was appointed manager of Celtic, leaving after less than a season in charge.
Mowbray will be joined at Middlesbrough by Mark Venus, his assistant in each of his previous managerial roles.
The new boss said he had no hesitation in taking the Boro job and although he was aware of the task ahead of him he was confident of turning the team around.
“There are some good players and characters at this club and we need to make sure we get them back on board and make sure they start enjoy winning and get the fans back through the turnstiles,” Mowbray said.
Paul Ince, Phil Brown and Gary Megson were all rumoured to be candidates for the job.

Former Hull Chairman Duffen Has ‘Fully-Funded’ Deal
Portsmouth may be out of administration but new owner Balram Chanrai – who takes control of the club for a second time – could soon be ready to sell.
Former Hull chairman Paul Duffen is said to be keen to buy the club from Chanrai, whose prime motivation in buying Pompey was to safeguard his £15 million investment.
The administrator, Andrew Andronikou, came to an agreement with a previous owner, Sacha Gaydamak, about a £2.2 million debt that will be paid off over five years. Gaydamak’s refusal to sign off the deal very nearly led to the club being liquidated.
Duffen is believed to be ready to pay around £10 million for the club and while he was trying to do a deal for some weeks prior to Portsmouth coming out of administration he has not given up hope of taking over.
“I have a fully-funded bid ready to go,” he said at the weekend.
“I have been looking for a good opportunity to get back into football and have been biding my time. I would love to take charge of a football club with such fantastic potential as Portsmouth.
“I had three very successful years at Hull, culminating in promotion to the Premier League, and done my time in the university of football that is the north of England.
“Portsmouth have a fantastic fan base and there is great potential to develop Fratton Park. It is a challenge that excites me.”
Duffen was chairman at Hull City from 2007 to 2009 during which time they won promotion to the Premier League.

Portsmouth Come Out Of Administration

Late Deal With Gaydamak Sees Chanrai Deal Agreed
Balram Chanrai is the new owner of Portsmouth Football Club after the club came out of administration late on Saturday night.
The club almost went into liquidation over the weekend when former owner Sacha Gaydamak was reported to be refusing to accept an agreement over monies he was owed. Administrator Andrew Andronikou said on Friday there was a very real chance that the club could be closed down if an agreement wasn’t reached but on Saturday solicitors acting for Mr Gaydamak agreed for their sum of £2.2 million to be paid over a period of five years.
In a statement on Saturday evening Mr Gaydamak expressed his frustration at the actions of Mr Andronikou and accused him of scaremongering.
“The news this week surrounding football and this club shows that the current preoccupation with money and finance isn’t helping the game and its reputation,” said Mr Gaydamak.
“Portsmouth Football Club, its fans, employees, players and the community that surrounds it deserve better than being subjected to rumour resulting from some parties using the press to create uncertainty as a negotiating tactic.
“I fully intended to sign the deal on Friday and had it not been changed at the last minute I would have.
“Everyone understood on Friday that further negotiations were now required. A new agreement was reached late this evening and as soon as I receive the papers I will sign them.
“I hope this draws to an end this unfortunate uncertainty surrounding the club. I wish everyone involved in the club well for the future.”
A statement on the Portsmouth website confirmed that the club had come out of administration:
“The administrators of Portsmouth City Football Club Ltd are pleased to announce that negotiations between the various parties concerning the sale of the club have now been satisfactorily concluded,” read the statement.
“Accordingly, the club has now been formally sold by the joint administrators, Messrs UHY Hacker Young, and will continue to trade outside of administration.
“The administrators would like to thank Mr Gaydamak for his co-operation and assistance in securing the future of the club and acknowledges that he has played an integral part in delivering its survival.”

Portsmouth FC Could Soon Be Liquidated

Portsmouth Fail To Come To Agreement With Gaydamak
Portsmouth FC could soon be liquidated.
In a statement on the club’s website this evening administrator Andrew Andronikou said that the club could soon be forced to “close down” after former owner Sacha Gaydamak failed to come to an agreement with the club about his debt which is secured against the club’s Fratton Park ground.
The statement said: “Put simply, despite being offered full payment for the secured part of his debt in accordance with the financial plan approved by the Football League, this morning Mr Gaydamak has demanded a very significant upfront cash payment in order to allow the deal to proceed by releasing his security.”
Portsmouth went into administration last season, receiving a nine point Premier League penalty in the process and were relegated at the end of a season in which they also reached the FA Cup Final for the second time in three years.
The statement added: “We will provide further information as soon as possible. However, it appears likely that the club will now be closed down and liquidated by the Administrators as they are unable to support the continued trading of the club.”

Middlesbrough Sack Gordon Strachan

Strachan and Middlesbrough Part Company
Gordon Strachan has parted company with Middlesbrough.
In a statement to the club’s official website owner Steve Gibson said that Strachan had left the club by mutual consent and that he would forego any compensation.
“Gordon is a man of great integrity,” said Gibson. “He has torn up his contract and walked away without compensation because he felt it was in the best interests of this football club.
“There are very few managers who have ever done that but that is the mark of the man.
“He feels he has given it everything he has got here but it hasn’t worked out and he has taken full responsibility for that.
“He knew that first team results weren’t anything like as good as we had hoped they would be and he agreed that the change had to be made.”
Gibson said that no successor had been appointed but that assistant manager Steve Agnew would take charge of the team for tomorrow’s game at Nottingham Forest.
“We are now working on a shortlist of potential candidates as Gordon’s successor,” added Gibson. “It is crucial we put the right man in charge so I will not rush into a decision.”
Speculation mounted after Strachan cancelled a press conference this afternoon citing a bout of gastro-enteritis. Reports from Teesside then suggested that Strachan was talking to club owner Steve Gibson and chief executive Keith Lamb about his future but at around five o’clock the Press Association reported that the club had parted company with their manager of 12 months’ standing.
Strachan won just 13 of his 46 games in charge after succeeding Gareth Southgate as manager in October 2009 and Middlesbrough slumped to 20th place in the Championship after a 2-1 home defeat by Leeds United on Saturday.
Boro had been one of the pre-season favourites to win promotion back to the Premier League after losing their place in the top flight in 2009 but after a disappointing start which has seen them win just three of their opening 11 league games attendances have slumped to around 15,000.

Middlesbrough Speculation: Strachan Cancels Press Conference

Rumours of Middlesbrough Announcement This Afternoon
Speculation is mounting over the future of Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan. The Boro manager cancelled a press conference scheduled for one o’clock this afternoon citing a bout of gastro-enteritis, however the rumour mill has gone into overdrive after it emerged that Boro are set to make an announcement at 5pm today.
Middlesbrough slumped to 20th place in the Championship after a 2-1 home defeat by Leeds United on Saturday. Boro had been one of the pre-season favourites to win promotion back to the Premier League after losing their place in the top flight in 2009 but after a disappointing start which has seen them win just three of their opening 11 league games attendances have slumped to around 15,000 and there is speculation that owner Steve Gibson’s patience is at an end.
Sky Sports News have been reporting this afternoon that Strachan has been holding talks this afternoon with Gibson and the club’s Chief Executive about his future though the local newspaper, the Evening Gazette, reports that there will be no announcement about the manager’s future this evening.
Gibson is due to appear on a phone-in on BBC Tees this evening.

Leicester Set To Offer Manager’s Job To Eriksson

Sven Set for Leicester Job
Leicester City are set to offer former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson a two-year contract to manage the club. Chairman Milan Mandaric is set to offer Eriksson the manager’s job at the Walkers Stadium after parting company with Paulo Sousa on Friday morning. The Portugese boss had been in charge for less than three months and the club were left propping up the Championship after Tuesday’s defeat at Norwich.
Eriksson has been out of work since parting company with the Ivory Coast national side after the World Cup finals but it is believed he has a verbal agreement to join Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal. The Swede has apparently shaken hands on a £1.2 million deal to join Al Hilal but looks set to be heading to the Championship instead.
Sousa was sacked after just nine games in charge at the Walkers Stadium and despite being given a vote of confidence by Mandaric at the beginning of the week. It is believed that Sousa had said at the start of the season that he wanted time to blend in his type of football and had been given assurances by the board that would be the case.
In a statement released through the League Managers’ Association, Sousa said: Sousa said: “To be sacked after being told that there was a long term strategy at the club and after only nine games in charge is something that I find very surprising.”
Meanwhile LMA chief executive Richard Bevan slammed Leicester saying “Knee-jerk dismissals, and the chopping and changing of managers will not deliver success on the field and is incredibly destabilizing to the entire club.”
He added: “Leicester City Football Club has had fourteen managers since 2004 and six whilst the current chairman has been at the club. Clearly the club has to examine its manager recruitment strategy as their current approach does not work. It is damaging to the club and its fans and is an inappropriate way to treat talented managers and their careers.”

Palace Keeper Could Yet Move To Fulham

Speroni To Open Contract Talks Despite Fulham Interest
Crystal Palace ‘keeper Julian Speroni could still move to Fulham in January after a last-minute move before the transfer window closed was scuppered.
The Argentinian stopper was set to become Mark Schwarzer’s replacement at Craven Cottage but the whole deal fell through as Schwarzer remained at Fulham.
“Of course I knew of the interest and I must admit at the time it was a bit disappointing,” Speroni told the Croydon Guardian.
“It was a good opportunity for me to go and play at the highest level but in the end I’m not sure how talks went and it is not myself that makes the last decision.
“I have been here a long time and I am very happy here so I have no problem staying. It was more the chance to play in the Premier League, not that I want to leave Palace.
Despite Fulham’s interest Speroni and Palace have begun talks about a new deal and the 30-year-old is hoping to sit down with Palace’s new owners again in the near future.
“We have had one meeting about the new contract already,” said Speroni.
“We will have to meet again soon as we need to get together and keep talking.”
However, Fulham are said to be keeping a close eye on developments, especially with Schwarzer still angling for a move to Arsenal and Mark Hughes may yet be back in for Speroni when the transfer window reopens in January.

Mandaric Mulling Portsmouth Return
Former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric could be about to make a dramatic return to Fratton Park.
Mandaric, currently chairman at Leicester City, is in the process of selling his stake in the Foxes and the 72-year-old says he could yet make a return to the south coast club.
“I’m still chairman here but there’s no secret about how much I love Pompey and I think I have another round left in me,” Mandaric told the BBC.
“But committing to anything now would be wrong, for the fans here and the fans there. I will not be putting my name near any deal for a club until I’m ready.”
Mandaric took control of Portsmouth in 1998 and during an eight-year spell at the club he took them into the Premier League for the first time since it was formed. He sold out to the Gaydamak family in 2006.
Portsmouth are still in administration with former owner Balram Chanrai set to resume control of the club, but Chanrai is still keen to sell and would be keen to listen to an offer from Mandaric. However, Mandaric claims he has nothing to do with a takeover bid by 22-year-old Cheshre-based businessman Tom Lever, who claims to be interested in buying the club.
“Tom Lever called me a couple of times to talk about Portsmouth and I told him I was already chairman of another club,” said Mandaric.
“Then I hear I am supposed to be making some kind of move with him. I have no intention whatsoever of getting involved with those people.”

Blackwell Bears No Grudges after Sheffield United Dismissal

“You Move Forward” Says former Blades Boss Blackwell
Former Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell says he bears no grudges against the club after he was dismissed last month.
Blackwell told the Sky Sports television programme Goals On Sunday that he had enjoyed his time at the club and that he accepted the board’s decision to bring to an end his two-and-a-half years as manager there.
“I had a great time there and I have no qualms about Sheffield United” said Blackwell, who joined the club in 1999 as assistant to then manager Neil Warnock. “You just know your career will start again somewhere else.
“My record at Sheffield United was nearly a 44 per cent win rate out of 160-odd games. If you can win nearly half your games you’re going to be there or thereabouts. In the three years we were never outside the top eight or nine.
“It is frustrating. I’d love to be able to keep a team together and be able to build from there.
Speaking about his dismissal he said “It was a surprise but you don’t dwell on the past, you move forward. I left a lot of good friends there and overall the directors and myself got on very well. It’s their decision and you have to abide by it.”

Cardiff Set To Unveil Bellamy Today
Championship side Cardiff City are set to unveil Craig Bellamy at a press conference later today.
The Welsh striker is set to join Cardiff on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City.
Bellamy, whose family live in the Cardiff area, is believed to have chosen the club over potential suitors that included Spurs, Everton, Fulham, Bolton and Celtic and his departure has been confirmed by Manchester City this lunchtime.
The 31-year-old was banned from training with the Manchester city squad after speaking out last week against the regime at Eastlands.
The move represents a huge boost for the Welsh side who until earlier this month were the subject of a transfer embargo.
