Birmingham City defender Roger Johnson is ready for the challenge of European football next season and is willing to ignore the attentions of some of the Premier League big guns, according to Metro.
Johnson is rumoured to be a target for both Liverpool and Spurs but team-mate Ben Foster says he expects the 27-year-old to remain at St Andrews next season as they prepare to face the Europa League next season following their 2-1 win over Arsenal in the Carling Cup Final on Sunday.
“With the amount of money some teams have, everybody has their price,” said Foster. “But we need him playing for us, doing the job he does for us.”
However, one man who looks set to leave St Andrews is Lee Bowyer. The 34-year-old midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and says he has already been told that there will be no new deal.
“My deal is done in the summer here at Birmingham so I will be looking elsewhere,” he said.
“I think at the moment the club have said no and a new contract is not going to happen.
“I wanted to stay anyway even before we won the cup. They might want to keep me on – you never know. It is not up to me, it is up to the club. All I can do is try to put in performances.”
However, the veteran still thinks he can do a job and is looking to stay in the game.
“I’m 34 and I can still do it, so we will have to see what happens. I feel good,” he said.
A combative midfielder, Bowyer has played 68 games for the Blues since signing on a two-year deal from West Ham in 2009. He has played 568 games in a 17-year career, scoring 95 goals.
