Rooney Contract Talks Rumoured To Have Stalled

Talks between Wayne Rooney and Manchester United about a new contract have been ended by Rooney himself, prompting rumours that the England striker could be heading to Spain.

The news comes in a report by Spanish newspaper AS, which reports that the England player has become so frustrated with media intrusion into his private life that he is ready to consider a move to La Liga.

Rooney’s contract expires at the end of next season and United are believed to be willing to offer an improvement on his £90,000 a week wages. However, it is believed to be the player holding things up and not the club.

Meanwhile, Rooney’s relationship with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is set to be thrust into the spotlight after Rooney questioned statements Ferguson has made about his fitness. Rooney was rested for United’s games with Valencia and Sunderland with Ferguson claiming he had an ankle injury, however Rooney said after England’s goalless draw with Montenegro that there was nothing wrong with his ankle and he didn’t know why Sir Alex has said that.

McGregor Is Latest Keeper Linked With United

Rangers keeper Allan McGregor is the latest goalkeeper to be linked with a move to Manchester United as the Old Trafford club step up the search for a successor to Edwin van der Sar.

The Dutch keeper, who turns 40 later this month, is rumoured to be set to retire at the end of the season and United have been linked with a number of keepers, principally Danish goalie Anders Lindegaard, Ajax’s Maarten Stekelenberg, Schalke’s German World Cup star Manuel Neuer, and Atletico Madrid youngster David de Gea.

Now, The Sun is linking United with Allan McGregor, the 28-year-old Rangers keeper, who would cost considerably less than the £20 million suggested for the likes of Neuer and de Gea.

McGregor has spent his entire career at Rangers apart from loan spells at St Johnstone and Dunfermline earlier in his career. The keeper has made seven appearances for the Scottish national side and was impressive in their 3-2 defeat by Spain at Hampden Park on Wednesday. He was brought in from the cold by current manager Craig Levein after being given a lifetime ban when caught making obscene gestures on camera while on the subs’ bench during Scotland’s game with Iceland in April of last year.

According to The Sun, United would pay around £5 million for McGregor who is under contract to Rangers until 2013. The Ibrox side are keen for him to sign a new five-year contract.
