United To Spend £10m On Neuer
Manchester United are ready to spend £10 million to sign Schalke 04 goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, according to a report in the Mail On Sunday.
The paper suggests that Neuer is Sir Alec Ferguson’s choice to replace Edwin van der Sar, who turns 40 at the end of this month. There have been suggestions that the Dutchman is ready to retire at the end of the season although van der Sar flatly denied such rumours earlier this week.
Last week Neuer described rumours linking him with an impending move to Bayern Munich as ‘humbug’ and added “My future is open. I’ve always said that in any case I will play at Schalke until the end of the season.” However, Schalke have made a poor start to the season with the club next to bottom of the Bundesliga after seven games and Neuer has also expressed his frustration with the current situation at the club.
“I hope we can turn the corner and get back on track,” Neuer said last weekend. “My contract runs until 2012 and I have always made it clear that I would play this season for Schalke.
“As for the future, we will see. I want to be playing in European competition next year.”
Arsenal are also said to be keen on Neuer, who starred in goal for Germany at this year’s World Cup Finals.
