Van der Sar Looking Likely To Quit As United Seek Successor

Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele has dropped the biggest hint yet that Edwin van der Sar is set to retire at the end of the season.

Steele said yesterday that he thought the Dutchman had made up his mind to go.

“I think Ed has made his mind up and this is his last year. He is a good pro and a sensible and highly intelligent guy, who will know when the time is right.

“I don’t think he will need myself or the manager to tell him that time has come. He will know.”

United have been strongly linked with Anders Lindegaard, currently with Norwegian side Aalesunds and Steele is believed to have travelled to watch him play on no fewer than five occasions during the current Norwegian season which runs during the summer months. The latest rumour is that United are set to make a £4 million bid for the Dane in January.

In a sense Lindegaard is a curious choice given that at 26 he has only really established himself in the past two seasons. He spent six years at Danish side Odense but only made 11 first-team appearances during that time. He had a spell on loan at Danish lower league side Kolding before another loan spell, this time at Aalesunds, where he established himself as first-choice keeper and signed for the club last year. He was in the side that won Aalesund’s first honour, the Norwegian Cup of 2009.

In September this year Lindegaard made his international debut for Denmark.

Other goalkeeping alternatives include Shay Given at cross-town rivals Manchester City and Russian keeper Igor Akinfeev, while the Daily Mail believes the Schalke 04 keeper Manuel Neuer has also been watched by United.

Neuer recently described reports in Germany linking him with a move to rivals Bayern Munich as ‘humbug.’ One of the stars of Germany’s World Cup campaign, Neuer said “My future is open,” but he added: “I’ve always said that in any case I will play at Schalke until the end of the season.”

  1. Championship

Edwin van der Sar could play more than this season. He will be 40 soon but Roger Milla scored a goal against Russia at World Cup in the USA at 42. A goal keeper job is easier than a striker.

  2. M.Urpani

For this keeper they have watched him play no fewer than 5 occasions
and Bebe 14M we did’nt know if he was black or white??????

Manchester United are lining up 24-year-old German international Manuel Neuer as a replacement for keeper Edwin van der Sar.
