Barcelona Could Look Elsewhere After Giving Up On Fabregas
Barcelona are set to switch their attention from Cesc Fabregas to Luka Modric after losing patience in their attempts to sign the Arsenal captain.
The Mail On Sunday is quoting sources in Spain as saying that Barca are ready to pay double the £16.5 million that Spurs paid Dinamo Zagreb for the Croatian in 2008. The paper also suggests that the Spanish champions are beginning to come to the same conclusion as Arsene Wenger did recently, that Fabregas will not be leaving Arsenal at any stage in the near future.
Wenger recently told the Arsenal shareholders’ AGM that he believes Fabregas will remain at the Emirates beyond the end of the season and for some seasons after that.

Modric has been squeezed out of the Spurs starting line-up, largely by the form of Gareth Bale much to the frustration of himself and his manager Harry Redknapp. The Spurs boss is loath to part with what he regards as one of his better players, but the prospect of a £30+ million transfer kitty as a result of the sale could sway his hand.

City Pledge To Outbid Contenders for Torres
Manchester City have pledged to outbid anyone else in the race to sign Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.
The Sunday People today quotes “a source close to Torres” as saying that City are willing to pay £1 more than anyone else to bring Torres to Eastlands as the club faces the real possibility of losing Carlos Tevez in 2011.
“City want to prepare a new project with Torres as their main star. Next season they want to make sure they are fighting for the Premier League title from the first moment again,”
the source is quoted as saying.
City have kept a line of communication open with Torres’ agents, Bahia International, while new Liverpool owner John W Henry is said to be in talks with the Spaniard to try and gain some idea of where he sees his future.
Santa Cruz for Leicester?
Meanwhile Roque Santa Cruz could be about to go on a short-term loan to Championship side Leicester City.
New Leicester boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is said to be keen on taking the Paraguayan striker to the Walkers Stadium while Santa Cruz is keen on the idea as it would get him playing again as well as putting him in the shop window ahead of the January transfer window.
Leicester are said to be willing to pay up to £20,000 a week of Santa Cruz’s wages.
The striker was told on Friday that he was free to leave City in January with former City boss Mark Hughes said to be keen on taking him to Fulham. Championship sides are allowed to make loan signings at present which would enable Santa Cruz to join the club ahead of a permanent move to another club.

United ‘Open Talks With Spanish Keeper’ – But Ferguson Says There Will Be No January Signings
Manchester United are said to have opened talks with Atletico Madrid over the £18 million transfer of goalkeeper David de Gea, according to the News Of The World.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson recently skipped his side’s Carling Cup clash with Scunthorpe to check out the young Spaniard who turns 20 next week.
However, if comments made last by Ferguson are to be believed then De Gea won’t be signed in January. The United manager ruled out making any signings in the winter transfer window claiming that hundreds of players are Cup-tied for European competition.
“By January we will have five months left of the season,” Ferguson said after United’s 2-0 win over Spurs.
“I will have Antonio Valencia back hopefully towards the end of February which is a new player coming back. If Owen Hargreaves were to get back, that is another new player coming back. So in that respect with the squad I’ve got, I don’t see any reason for us to buy anyone.
“There has always been money to spend but it’s not necessarily the case that there will be more transfer activity by us than usual in the summer. We will buy what we need to buy. We know what we need.
“There is always this issue if Van der Sar, Scholes, Giggs or Neville were to retire, but we’ve had that situation for the last two or three years. We are well ahead of that. We know exactly what we have to do with that.”
De Gea is widely regarded as one of Europe’s best young goalkeepers and United are said to have identified him as a possible target some months ago and even watched him play for Atletico’s second-string before he became a fixture in the first team.
He made his first team debut in a Europa League clash with Porto in September 2009 and made his league debut a few days later before becoming a regular in the Atletico side during the second half of last season with the arrival of Quique Sanchez Flores as manager.
The young Spaniard is one of a number of keepers United have watched as they look to replace the 40-year-old Edwin van der Sar. Manuel Neuer of Schalke and Anders Lindegaard with a bid for Pepe Reina also said to be a possibility.
Ferguson’s insistence that he won’t make any January signings comes after the Wayne Rooney contract saga in which the England striker was reassured about the club’s committment to strengthening the squad. There has been speculation about a transfer kitty worth anything between £50 million and £100 million and the rumour mill has been in overdrive with stories of various signings – of which De Gea is merely the latest – and some papers are even interpreting Ferguson’s comments as part of a power struggle between him and Rooney as to who runs United.
Wigan are hoping to sign Spanish defender Adrian Lopez from Deportivo La Coruna. The 23-year-old was linked with a move to the DW Stadium in August following a week-long trial.
Lopez – also known by the nickname Piscu – broke into the Deportivo first team in 2007 having come through the ranks via their B team. After losing his place first-team opportunities became limited and eight appearances in 2008-09 were followed by just three last season.
It was thought that the 23-year-old Piscu was available on a free transfer but a new contract was apparently triggered automatically without his signature and Fifa may have to approve his current status.

Stoke Renew Interest In Jemal
Stoke City are interested in Young Boys central defender/left back Ammar Jemal. The Tunisian signed for the Swiss side only this summer and played in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier with Spurs.
Jemal moved to Young Boys from Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel in May of this year and his performances for the Berne side have brought him to Tony Pulis’s attention. Pulis failed to make a move for the 23-year-old before the transfer window closed but rumours began to circulate earlier this month about a bid in the January window. It is believed that Young Boys are looking for £2 million for a player they signed on a free transfer just six months ago.
Jemal was an African Champions League winner with Etoile du Sahel in 2007 and has played 23 times for the Tunisian national side scoring three goals.
Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere looks set to sign a new five-year deal at the Emirates. The 18-year-old is expected to at least treble his current £15,000-a-week wages as boss Arsene Wenger looks to tie down one of his hottest young properties.
“Jack has had a great start to the season, in a position where we expected him to come out higher on the pitch but, basically, it suits him well to play from deep,” said Wenger.
“There is a touch of Liam Brady about him. I totally agree with that.
“He is a quiet guy, but it looks like he can handle the pressure well. Where you see that is in the big games, as he wants the ball. So it is natural for him to play.
“He is like Wayne Rooney was at 16 or 17. They have the same confidence about them.
“It is a bit like asking a mathematician to solve a problem and then you ask someone else who is not gifted to solve one too – but it is natural for Jack.”
Wilshere is expected to be in the England squad to face France next month.
Arsenal Block Szczesny Loan Deal
Arsene Wenger looks set to block any loan move for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, according to Talk Sport.
The radio station reports that Celtic have been interested in taking the 20-year-old Pole to Parkhead for the rest of the season but with Vito Mannone now on loan at Hull City Wenger doesn’t want to be left with only two senior keepers and expects Szczesny to fight for a first-team spot with Lukasz Fabianski and Manuel Almunia.

Roque Santa Cruz Can Leave Manchester City
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has said that Roque Santa Cruz can leave the club in the January transfer window.
The Paraguayan has failed to make an impression since he arrived from Blackburn Rovers in an £18 million transfer in the summer of 2009 and he has only managed four goals in his 23 appearances for the club.
“I hope for him that he can go to play for another team, because he deserves this,” said Mancini.
He added: “Roque is a fantastic man and a good player, but he knows the situation here. I am very sorry for him because he deserves to play every game, because he works very well. But it is difficult at the moment.”
Earlier this week Santa Cruz expressed his frustration in an interview with a Spanish radio station and hinted that he may leave the club when the transfer window re-opens.
Fulham are expected to show an interest in signing Santa Cruz. Cottagers boss Mark Hughes brought him to the Premier League when he signed him for Blackburn from Bayern Munich in a £3.5 million deal in 2007. He also signed him for Manchester City in 2009 after he became boss at Eastlands and was interested in taking him to Craven Cottage after he became manager there this summer.
“My interest in him before was there for everybody to see,” said Hughes. “Whether we pursue that in January is open to debate.
“This time in the transfer window we want to target players quite early so that we are ready to flick the switch when the window opens.”
French side Marseille and Serie A outfit Lazio also showed an interest in Santa Cruz, who was expected to leave City during the summer.
Wright-Phillips Linked With Blackburn Move
Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror reports that City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips is a target for Blackburn Rovers.
Blackburn look set to be taken over by India’s VH Group next month and are looking for a cash injection to spend in the transfer market. Rovers boss Sam Allardyce is set to be handed a transfer kitty believed to be between £5-10 million.
VH are said to be ready to link up with football agency Kentaro, who have Wright-Phillips as one of their clients. The winger has been pushed down the pecking order at Eastlands and could be available for around £6 million.
Manchester United News: Rooney Will Have To Fight To Displace Hernandez

Hernandez’s Has “Everything In His Favour” – Ferguson
Wayne Rooney will have to fight to displace Javier Hernandez from Manchester United’s starting line-up, according to manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The United boss revealed that Rooney’s lay-off with an ankle injury is likely to be longer than the three weeks and he is unlikely to be fit for the Manchester derby on 10 November. However, with Hernandez hitting three goals in two games for United in Rooney’s absence Ferguson almost has an embarrassment of riches up front. The Mexican has scored a total of six goals in five games this season while Dimitar Berbatov has also hit form scoring seven times.
Speaking about Hernandez, who signed from Mexican side Chivas for £9 million this summer, Ferguson said “We had a feeling he would break through and, therefore, it gives you a problem, but the right kind of problem.”
Speaking about the possibility of leaving out Hernandez when Rooney is ready to return, Ferguson admitted that it would be difficult. “I’m not even suggesting he will be left out. He’s keeping his place in the team because he deserves to keep his place in the team.”
Ferguson added: “There is plenty of evidence the boy has got something. He’s enjoying it here, his family are with him, he speaks the language, he’s got desire, he trains very well, he’s receptive to coaching, he looks after himself, he has good pedigree. His winning goal on Tuesday demonstrated he’s a very good finisher. Everything is in his favour.”
Italy Awarded 3-0 Win Over Serbia In Abandoned Match

Serbia v Northern Ireland Game To Be Played Behind Closed Doors
UEFA have awarded a 3-0 win to Italy over Serbia after their Euro 2012 qualifying match in Genoa earlier this month was abandoned due to crowd trouble.
In addition the Football Association of Serbia – the FSS – has been ordered to play its next two matches behind closed doors with a one-match ban deferred for a probationary period of two years.
The match on 12 October was abandoned after just seven minutes when violence broke out amongst Serbian supporters in the ground.
UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body has banned Serbian supporters from all away matches in the Euro 2012 qualifying competition and the FSS has been fined a total of €120,000.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) received a sanction of one match to be played behind closed doors. This sanction is deferred for a probationary period of two years. The FIGC was fined €100,000.
Both associations have three days within which to lodge an appeal.
Serbia’s next home game in the tournament is against Northern Ireland on 25 March 2011 and this game will be played behind closed doors. The ban on Serbian travelling support will affect their games with Estonia, Northern Ireland and Slovenia.
Getafe’s Ghana midfielder Derek Boateng is a summer target for Spurs. The 27-year-old has been told he cannot leave the Spanish club in January but he will be allowed to go at the end of the season as long as Getafe’s valuation is met.
Blackburn, Middlesbrough and West Brom have previously been interested in Boateng, who helped his country to the quarter-finals of the World Cup last summer but Spurs’ main competition for his signature will come from La Liga side Sevilla who are also keeping tabs on Boateng’s situation.
Real Quash Reports Of Benzema Departure
Spurs are also keen on Real Madrid’s French striker Karim Benzema. The former Lyon man is rumoured to be a target for Harry Redknapp’s side although the Spurs manager fears there may be an auction for the 22-year-old. However, Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano has told French paper L’Equipe that Benzema is going nowhere, despite him scoring only once so far this season.
“This is a very young player and everyone needs time to mature”, said Valdano.
“Right now, he needs some protection because he faces pressure at a very high level of competition. But the technical staff and Jose Mourinho are all trying to give him the necessary framework to display the talent he showed in a very difficult championship in France.”
Valdano also dismissed rumours of a move away from the Bernabeu for Benzema saying: “This time of the season is too short to make a final decision on a player. Last season I remember Higuain had not scored a single goal at this time of the year and see what he has since shown the world of football.”
Roma striker Mirko Vucinic is said to be a January transfer target for Liverpool.
Reports from Italy suggest that the Montenegrin is unhappy at Roma and has clashed in recent weeks with boss Claudio Ranieri and was particularly unhappy at being substituted in the game with Parma at the weekend.
Vucinic was linked with a move to Manchester City during the summer but quashed rumours of a transfer to Eastlands when he said he was happy in the Italian capital and that if he did move it would be because the Serie A side had received “an offer that Roma considers important”.
However, TalkSport now reports that Liverpool could be interested in signing Vucinic in January. One possible sticking point could be the price and whether new Anfield owner John W Henry would be interested in paying the £13.5 million Roma would want for Vucinic when he has reportedly told manager Roy Hodgson that big-money would not be spent on players this winter.
“Reina Not For Sale” – Hodgson
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has said that goalkeeper Pepe Reina is not for sale. Reports in recent days suggest that Reina is unhappy at Liverpool and is looking to move on just months after signing a deal that would keep him at Anfield until 2016.
There are rumours that Manchester United and Arsenal are looking to put in bids for Reina but Hodgson told the Liverpool Echo that his keeper is going nowhere.
“We have heard nothing from Manchester United and, more to the point, we don’t want to hear anything from Manchester United,” Hodgson said.
“If Ferguson is looking around at the end of the season and he has got lots of money to replace van der Sar, he might very well want Pepe Reina because he is the best around, but we do not want to sell him. I would like to think that we are going to become a successful club once again and Pepe is crucial to that.”
Liverpool “Offered” Lyon Striker Lopez
Liverpool are reported to have been offered Lyon’s Argentine striker Lisandro Lopez in January.
Lyon are said to be offering Lopez, who has scored four goals in nine games this season to add to the 24 he scored in his 49 games last season, but the player’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo said: “He is happy in Lyon but a big offer could change that.”
Lyon bought Lopez from Porto for an intial fee of 24 million euros. Spanish media were reporting earlier this week that Lopez has also been offered to Atletico Madrid, a move that has the press speculating about Diego Forlan’s future. A move to Liverpool for Forlan has also been guessed at.
Ferguson To Turn To Schweinsteiger and Huddlestone After Sneijder Signs New Inter Deal
Wesley Sneijder has put paid to rumours linking him with a move to Manchester United by signing a two-year extension to his current contract with Inter Milan. The deal will keep Sneijder at the San Siro until 2015 and is said be worth around 5 million euro per season (about £80,000 a week).
Sneijder’s new contract with Inter has put Bastien Schweinsteiger and Tom Huddlestone at the top of Sir Alex Ferguson’s £50 million wish-list, according to the Daily Star.
Ferguson is set to turn to the £30 million-rated Schweinsteiger after missing out on Sneijder. The 26-year-old midfielder is under contract to Bayern Munich until 2012 and Ferguson is said by the paper to be keen to sign a player approaching the peak of his career.
Ferguson is also said by the Star to be keeping tabs on Huddlestone. The 23-year-old Spurs’ central midfielder would cost United around £20 million although Ferguson would expect a fight from Spurs to hold on to one of their top players.
Giggs, Scholes and Neville Offered Huge Dubai Deals
Ryan Giggs has been offered £200,000 a week to finish his playing career in Dubai, according to The Sun. The winger is one of three Manchester United veterans who have been offered big deals to go and play for Al-Ahli, managed by former Leeds boss David O’Leary, who play in the UAE League.
The 35-year-old Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, also 35, have all been offered huge pay-days to end their playing days in the Middle East. Italian World Cup captain Fabio Cannavaro joined Al-Ahli this summer and is quoted by the paper as saying: “I always thought of moving to live in Dubai as I love it – I have achieved my dream.” Cannavaro is believed to be on £110,000-a-week tax-free.
Giggs was recently quoted as saying he would end his career at United, however, along with Scholes and Neville he is out of contract at the end of the season and could be tempted by the lure of one last big payday.
O’Leary and Cannavaro were brought to Al-Ahli after a disappointing 2009-10 season when they finished eighth in the UAE League, just a year after winning the league title. All bar three of the team’s squad are local players and the new management of the club are looking to bring in international talent as the club struggles in fifth place six points off the top of the table.
Sunderland Slap £20m Price-Tag On United Target Henderson
United are being linked by the Daily Express with Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson.
Manager Steve Bruce recently issued a hands-off message to Chelsea and has slapped a £20 million price tag on the 20-year-old, who is being watched by Fabio Capello’s staff with a view to making an appearance in the England friendly with France next month.
United Scouts Watch Argentine Teenager
Manchester United have sent scouts to watch Argentinian striker Rogelio Funes Mori, according to the Daily Mail.
The 19-year-old River Plate centre-forward has also attracted the attention of AC Milan and Real Madrid. Mori was spotted by River Plate while training at Chelsea when he was 12-year-old. He made his debut for the Argentinian club last year and has hit nine goals in his 31 league appearances for the side.
The Mail also reports that United are interested in Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi.
Bolton Wanderers striker Ivan Klasnic has been questioned by police in connection with the alleged rape of a teenage girl.
Police were called to an apartment in the centre of Manchester in the early hours of Monday morning, where a 17-year-old made an allegation of sexual assault, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said.
Croatian striker Klasnic, 30, was held for questioning and has been released on police bail until 1 November pending further enquiries. It is believed the striker was not at the address at the time the call was made but was arrested later.
Klasnic was signed from French club Nantes in August after a successful loan spell at the Reebok last season.
He was on loan from French club Nantes last season but the French side did not renew his contract over the summer. He has scored twice in four games this season but was sent off after scoring the winning goal against Stoke on 16 October.
Manchester United News: “Guardiola for United” – Report

United “Approach Guardiola”
The Daily Star reports that Manchester United have made a sensational approach to Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola to take over at Old Trafford at the end of the season.
Guardiola is on a year-to-year contract at the Nou Camp and will sit down with the Barcelona board in January to talk about next year’s deal but the Star reports that United have sounded him out about taking over at Old Trafford next season and the paper claims that it is being done with the blessing of current boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The paper suggests that United have received encouraging noises from Guardiola’s agent Josep Maria Orobitg and that the prospect of having responsibility of running the Premier League side from top to bottom appeals to the 39-year-old coach.
Guardiola won a treble of La Liga title, Spanish Cup and Champions League in his first season at the Nou Camp and his side retained the League title next season. According to the paper Guardiola has the character and ability to succeed Ferguson at Old Trafford and the Scot has been impressed by the football Barcelona have played under Guardiola which Ferguson says is important for the traditions of United.
The Star says Barcelona will fight to keep hold of their manager but, given he is free to leave, United know he would be available without the need to pay out any compensation.
Everton skipper Phil Neville hopes Steven Pienaar can be persuaded to stay at Goodison Park. The South African midfielder has stalled on contract negotiations said to be worth £55,000 a week and can speak to other clubs in January but Neville hopes Pienaar will sign a new deal with Everton.
“It would be a massive blow to lose him,” Neville said yesterday,
“He’s such an influential character, but it happened to Joleon Lescott and we didn’t want him to move.
“You can say to Steven every minute of the day that we don’t want him to leave, but at the end of the day it’s his decision. He’s from South Africa, he’s played for Ajax, then Dortmund. Now he’s been to Everton and had the happiest days of his career, I think.
“The club wants him to stay, but there’s not much else we can say. He’s probably weighing up his options now and you just hope for our sake that he signs.
“I wouldn’t want another player delving into it if I was in this situation – it’s between the manager, Steven and the chairman. It is just up to Steven to make the right decision now.”
Inter Milan, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham are all said to be keen on landing the 28-year-old.

Mbokani Dismisses Spurs Interest
Monaco striker Dieumerci Mbokani has rejected talk of a move to Spurs in January.
The Belgian joined the French side in the summer after turning down approaches from both Birmingham and Fulham but he says he is happy in the south of France even though he has only scored once so far this season.
“I am flattered by the interest shown by Spurs, but I love it at Monaco at the moment,” Mbokani said.
“Let’s wait and see – you never know in football.”

Bayern Launch £40m bid For City Target Dzeko
Bayern Munich have launched a £40 million bid for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.
The Bosnian, was a summer target for Manchester City, who turned down the chance this summer to sign him for a reported £34 million, but Bayern are set to turn to Steve McLaren’s side for the fire power that has deserted them this season.
Bayern currently lie in 11th position in the 18-team league but their eight goals scored is the lowest total of any team in the Bundesliga. Should Dzeko arrive at the Allianz Arena then it is likely that Mario Gomez will head for the exit with Liverpool said to be interested.

Chelsea and Real In Race for Lukaku
The Daily Telegraph has jumped on the Romelu Lukaku bandwagon and reports that Real Madrid are fighting it out with Chelsea in their efforts to sign the 17-year-old Anderlecht striker.
The report quotes sources at Anderlecht as saying the striker’s preferred options are Real Madrid and Chelsea although Anderlecht turned down an offer during the close season of £17.5 million which was rumoured to be from Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea also made an enquiry during the summer but Lukaku and his father, former footballer Roger Lukaku, decided to keep in Belgium for one more year.
Now, the Telegraph reports that Jose Mourinho has stepped up his efforts to land the youngster, described as ‘the new Didier Drogba’ while Drogba himself recently rang Lukaku to urge him to sign for Chelsea. Both Drogba and his strike partner at Stamford Bridge Nicolas Anelka are now over 30.
Lukaku is 6ft 3 and of a muscular build and prefers to play as a lone striker. He has scored four goals in nine league games for Anderlecht this season and chipped in with two more in their unsuccessful Champions League qualifying campaign.

Torres and Reina “Could Quit Anfield” – Report
Both Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina are set to use escape clauses in their contracts to quit the club in January, according to the Daily Mirror.
The pair had the clauses inserted into their contracts during the summer after both had intensive talks with Liverpool chief executive Christian Purslow, who quit last week. According to the paper Purslow laid out the club’s future plans, which included new owners, a £100 million transfer kitty and that Roy Hodgson was only a temporary manager with a ‘big name’ lined up to take his place.
Now the new owners are finally in place and NESV chief John W Henry has told players there will be no huge transfer kitty. Hodgson has been told by NESV that there will be no ‘marquee’ signing during the January transfer window. Now Torres and Reina are set to activate their escape clauses, according to the paper, and will leave in January.
Both were said to be the subject of bids during the summer with Chelsea bidding £50 million for Torres and Arsenal £20 million for Reina. Manchester United are also said to be keen to sign Reina while Torres still interests Chelsea and Barcelona.
Bayern Move for Dzeko Could Lead To Gomez Bid
Despite reports that there will be no big name signings at Anfield in January, reports still link Liverpool with Mario Gomez. The Bayern Munich striker is said to be ready to quit the club while Bayern themselves are ready to launch a £40 million bid for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko, a summer target for Manchester City.
