Mourinho Hasn’t Given Up On Gerrard, But Torres Is Undecided On Liverpool Future

Steven-Gerrard

Jose Mourinho is to make one last bid to persuade the Real Madrid hierarchy to shell out the £30 million that would take Steven Gerrard to the Bernabeu.

Mourinho wants Real president Florentino Perez to make an exception to the rule that the club only bids for younger players by putting in a £30 million bid for the 30-year-old Gerrard.

Mourinho has long been an admirer of Gerrard and twice before tried to sign the player for Chelsea.

Fernando Torres

However, Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has a more pressing problem with Fernando Torres.

Hodgson admitted on Saturday that he can do no more to persuade the Spaniard to stay at Anfield, saying: “I’ve had a meeting with Fernando but there’s not much more I can say. If he has got problems with the club about things that happened in the past, then it’s difficult for me to dismiss that.

“His situation has got nothing to do with me and he made that clear on the phone during the World Cup and when I met him face-to-face. I can’t do much more than let him know that, like every Liverpool fan, I would like him to stay and would love to work with him. It’s now for the club to satisfy him in whatever way they need to.”

The club’s MD Christian Purslow is in Majorca trying to persuade Torres to honour his contract which expires in 2013.

Torres himself has given no indication as to whether or not he wishes to stay at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Javier Mascherano is set to submit a transfer request to Liverpool. The Argentinian is desperate to join up with former boss Rafa Benitez at Inter Milan.

Liverpool In Forlan Move If Torres Goes

Diego Forlan

Liverpool will move for Diego Forlan if Fernando Torres does leave Anfield.

The Uruguayan is said to be available from Atletico Madrid for around £15 million, although Liverpool will have to match his wages of £100,000 a week. However, earlier this month Forlan said he would never return to the Premier League after his disastrous spell with Manchester United a few years ago.

Spurs have also enquired about Forlan this summer, although the fee for a player of his age – Forlan is 31 – deterred Harry Redknapp from taking his interest any further.

Lyon In Bid To Snatch Remy

The Loic Remy saga drags on with former club Lyon ready to counter any bid from West Ham, Arsenal or Liverpool.

Under the terms of the deal negotiated when Lyon sold Remy to Nice in 2008, they have first option on the player as long as they can match any other bid.

Lyon now have 48 hours to match bids from the Premier League trio and scupper Remy’s move to England.

Remy almost moved back to Lyon during the January transfer window but the two clubs were unable to agree a deal.
